I joined up 56 years ago, when Sgt's were E4's and there were no L/Cpl's. Pretty salty!!
Thanks for the Welcome,

Dad was a Raider with the 2nd Raider Bttn. James Roosevelt, the presiden't son was the XO and is mentioned in some of Dad's letter's home. Dad, then Major Earl R. Marquardt, became the the XO of the First Amphib Recon Bttn under James Jones, Sr. father of James Jones, Jr. future CMC! I once asked Dad what he did during the war. He said they went ashore on Jap held islands in their rubber boats, took prisoners, questioned the prisoners, and left in their rubber boats. I asked him what they did with the prisoners. He said the Sergeants took care of them. I never asked "exactly" what that meant.
My tour was unremarkable.
#2 son joined the reserves, completed boot camp and I later drove him to CP for the School of Infantry. I got him an eyeball to eyeball with a Major General (mate from TBS) before he reported to SOI. He was a bit embarrassed at the time but now thinks that it was pretty cool. The whole time I was on active duty I never even saw a General Grade Officer, ha. He finished SOI and within a week his reserve unit was activated and he got an all expense paid (at considerable government expense) trip to Iraq. He then came home and went to Bridgeport and was an aggressor for a few months for the units training there. He's still in the active reserves and just got meritoriously promoted to Corporal. He's finishing up at a CC in San Luis Obispo and has been accepted to the Colorado School of Mines where he plans on majoring in Petroleum Engineering. There may be hope for that child. The USMC(R), the miracle cure for wayward children.
Semper Fi,
Cheers,
Gus
