Good morning From the great Country of Texas

Postby niget2002 » Wed Mar 14, 2012 10:09 am

Hello,

My name is David. I enjoy Pina Coladas, getting caught in the rain (but not on the motorcycle), and cooking large cuts of meat in big metal buckets.

The wife and I recently inherited what can best be described as a small wooden coffin one might sleep in while camping. Her uncle used it on hunting trips and has recently built a larger 'gypsy tent'. The trailer needs some work, and I'm actually tempted to rip it down to the frame and start over as the wife, child, and I do not fit in it in it's current state. I'm hoping to widen it beyond the edges of the frame out to the wheel width to try and get a queen sized blowup bed in it.

I've helped dad build boats and am real familiar with all things fiberglass, so the new incarnation will be sealed up more water-proof than a duck's tookuss.

I've been lurking on this site for a while and will be stealing everyone's great ideas. I will try to give credit where I can remember where I saw it first.

No idea on a timeline at this point. The wife and I are buying a new house in a few months to move closer to work, which will hopefully free up some time shortly after as it currently takes over an hour to get home each night.

I will probably keep lurking here for a bit, but at least ya'll know I'm here, so I'm no longer 'stalking'.

Happy trails to those that are rolling and watch the pointy end to those that are still building.

Welcome aboard, David. Good for you, gonna build your own better version of an ideal teardrop for the 3 of you. Now all you have to do is to decide how long, high, and wide it's gonna be. I sounds like the wooden one you inherited is a bit wider at the shoulders and tapers towards the feet, kinda like you described it, only using different words. Please post a pic, so we can see what it looks like. We die-hard teardroppers just love our little camping rigs, and I am sure you will too, once yours is big enough to sleep the 3 of you. Texas, oh yes, I remember Texas. While driving West on my honeymoon in 1952, the sun rose after we left the motel in Texarkana and it was dark again by the time we got to El Paso. Wow, one whole day, one whole State, and a great one too, I might add. Good luck on your build, but really, wood is good, just ask me. :-)

No pictures at this point... I tried, I really did, but for some reason the camera broke. Master Google has a picture of someone else's that looks similar. Difference being, mine was painted with spray paint and has a very slightly curved front. Image

Learned the word tookus from my grandmother who grew up in the Hill Country.

I have no problems with wood. I do quite a bit of woodworking. I just know a nice laye of fiberglass helps things in the brutal Texas summers. For those keeping track, I'm in the Greater Dallas area... not to be confused with the Fort Worth area (those people are weird, I'm just crazy).

And where might one find more details on the next South Central Gathering? :)

Right now, any camping we do in this thing will be the wife and child in the trailer and me and the dog in a tent

Hi David,
Boatbuilding skills should serve you well in this project. Especially on the exterior.
I am still stuck on the trailer frame, where to get metal, how to weld it, etc. But once I get past that, I plan to FLY and post pictures all over this board.
It's always interesting to see what ideas someone new comes up with, and how they make it happen.
And this is a good place to toss around things before you start cutting.
Welcome,
Rhett
