I need wheels - quick!!

Postby StanDahl » Sat Mar 17, 2012 3:57 pm

I went to my Plan B custom trailer shop this morning, and it went very well. I went over my trailer dimensions with the guy, but since I don't have my wheels yet, there is only so much he can do until I show up with the wheels I want to put on this thing. I want something that I can put baby moon hub caps on. Interestingly, Moon (or Mooneyes) which I drive past every day, doesn't seem to stock something like that. The Pomona swap meet isn't until April 15, and I'd like to get started before that, since I have spring break the week before. Where can I get these in 13" in SoCal quickly? I'll be going to the Perris get-together next weekend if anyone has anything they'd like to sell. Thanks!

John...you can always have him build it with 5 on 4.5" hubs...that's a real standard hub and you can pick up wheels all over the place for that. You can also go with 14's and put on a lower profile tire if height is a concern. If there is a pick-n-pull around or a junk yard, you can find some used ones there...just watch your offset on them and if you are set about having moons on them, make sure you get the wheels with the cap bumps on them. Just an idea. Doug

Here's a site that will give you all the info on what wheels will fit a hub, and that's what you need to know. If'n it were me, I'd get one that will be easy to match up to a wheel, and the 5 on 4.5"s are. Hubs are given by the number of studs and what the diameter of the bolt pattern is. I've got a 13" with this pattern, but it's in a white spoker type wheel. 13's with a center hub to accept caps might be tougher. Doug

It would seem to me that that style wheel would only be found on cars from the 70's and older, no? That link Doug included will come in handy. It shows that my Ranger wheels (see below) are 5x4.5, they aren't really what I want, but they might not look too bad, just not very 50's. The front end of my design is going to look like a Stratoliner...

I got a full set of four of those exact wheels off of Craigslist for $80. Gonna use em on a couple of projects. I picked up a nice set of Ford Ranger rims the week before last in San Diego (they have SS skins that make em look like chrome plated) for $150 for my son's truck (he's "gotten religion" and is gonna put the truck back to stock). On Friday night I picked up 4 Chevy S10 alloy wheels in El Monte (with the hub caps an special lug nuts and plastic caps) for $50. #2 son is moving to Colorado (to attend Mines) and wanted an extra set of rims for snow tires. They were $50 (I thing the scrap value of the aluminum is more than what I paid). I AM the "Rim King" of Simi Valley!

I got all of the rims off of Craigslist. There are a bunch out there and some can be had for good prices.

As trailer spindles stick out a bit farther than car/truck spindles ensure that the hub cap of the rims you choose will clear the spindle. Ford rims are typically 5X5 bolt pattern and Chevy are 5X4.75 but once you find your rims you can order hubs that match the pattern of your rims.

I suggest you take a bit of time, shop around, and you can get some cool wheels for a good price. A few weeks one way or the other won't really matter in the long run. I tried to find "Baby Moons" to fit modern wheels but didn't meet with much success.

Hope this helps.

When you guys use wheels off a car/truck, how do you deal with the offset? Also, if one is using a torsion axle, don't we have to be concerned about trailing arm clearance??

I have two 15"x6 Bare smoothies that I painted red. They are made for baby moons . They have a 3 5/8 off set. I ordered them for the tear Im building and they were not what I needed so I bought another set. I was going to put these on my utility trailer but would sell them to ya if they will work for you.

You just have to check and see if they'll clear or not.

Those are nice wheels for sure, dano, but you're way up north! I looked at some other td's in the hall of fame, and realized that my wheels will be at least half covered by a skirt, so I'm following up on one of the leads Gus posted for the Ranger wheels. They are nice looking wheels at a great price, but the ad is a month old. I haven't heard back from the guy yet, but I'm hoping...

Keep looking, time is on your side. I've purchased 4 sets of 4 wheels over the past couple of years usually paying less than $100 for a set of four. Patience is a virtue. It may take a couple of weeks but they're out there.

Cheers,

Gus

Where in So. Cal do you live? I discovered a little place that is local to me in Lakewood, CA that sells used wheels. It's a hole in the wall! Amazed at what he had on the racks everywhere! I wanted a vintage look, but needed a higher load rating for my trailer (truck wheels). A teardrop will be lighter so most any wheel will work. If he doesn't have it, he can make it! If you are looking for newer wheels most any wheel shop will do.

Bellflower, CA 90706

Then I went to Hubcap Mikes which is still local to me in Orange, CA for the moon caps and beauty ring.

My brother is going to the Bay Area in the middle of April. He could pick them up and bring them to Simi Valley.
