5x8 frame need to extend length

Postby DogStar » Thu Mar 08, 2012 6:54 am

Morning!
My question and situation:
This is a standard 5x8 red trailer, trailer.
My plan is to cantilever (or at least extend the front of the Tear 15 inches) the tear forward appx 15 inches, as a result I need to extend the tongue at least the same 15inches

The Tear will be appx 5'0"x 9'3' inches overall.

Ideas on how best to accomplish this?
I want to do it by bolting new members in and not welding.

Let's hope these pics show up, otherwise I will come back in to edit some more!
Thanks gang!
Let's try this again!!!

If it were my delima I would remove the coupler and slice a small section off of the main tongue tube and make a trip to the nearest steel supplier and find what member fits inside the cut off. If I can find a suitable candidate that fits snuggly I would purchase a 3 - 4 foot section and another 15 inches of the actual sample of the existing tongue tube. Slide the undersized piece in the existing tube and bolt thru then ad your extention and bolt it as well. I personally would entertain using two reciever pins for one of these connections then if I felt the need I could easily and quickly remove the coupler and there by reduce the potential for possible theft. I have seen this exact same thing done on several of the removable tongue builds right here on the forum.

THANKS!
Do you think I could get away without any additional diagonals to support the extra long tongue?

Because of the fact that the tongue tube is now made thicker and stronger by "doubling" up in the way you mention?
Have others done this successfully without additional supports?

I was considering much the same but thought I would need to add diagonals as well.
Even to the extent that I was considering adding more length and width to the basic rectangular frame as well.

I want to od this as simply a possible, of course, but still be safe.

BTW that is a great tip about allowing the full receiver to be removable!
Going to use it.

bobhenry's suggestion, if I've understood it correctly, sounds weaker than what you've already got. Where the outer tubes join only the inner tube is continuous, so that's the weak link in the chain and is where the tongue will want to fail. Tubes size (height and width) matters much more than thickness so a tube small enough to fit inside the existing tongue is going to be quite a lot weaker.

I can't see any simple way to extend the tongue as much as you want. I would remove the centre tube and the diagonals and replace them with longer and stronger tubes. In the process I'd try to get that joining plate moved forwards by about as much as the tongue is extended - if you're lucky the next hole in the front cross-member may line up about right. Looks easier than what I was originally envisioning.
That's why I look to everyone here.

I will make a new joining plate if needed.

Keep the ideas coming, this will work out!
I have found a steel supply about an hour away, so that is good.

I talked to the guy at red trailers a while back, and he can sell us rectangular sections to extend the length of the chassis, in 2' increments. So if you wanted to turn a 5x8 into a 5x10, no problem.

I think he also sells some kind of a tongue extension, but I've not researched that.

I may have to do some research soon, as I have the green light to build the OWW, and it's going to require a really long chassis.

Thanks Mike, that is pretty interesting I might give him a call and look into it. Sort of guessing it might be a more expensive route, but might ultimately be a time and effort saver.

Finally got an email to Tim at Red Trailers sent of this morning.
Studying their website I did see a hitch extension, but nothing about a frame extension.

Here's to hoping they have something!!!
