also post what brand of tar. sounds to me like the tar had a high solvent content which reacted with the glue in the plywood. I've never heard of this before, but it's the only thing in my mind that makes sense.

Were you using marine grade plywood or just "indoor" plywood?

Well, it would appear the Chinese have found a way to make their plywood even WORSE than it was before  ... Maybe it’s time we just STOP using it all together ... :o That’s THE WISE THING TO DO !!!

Better if some would compose a letter ( representing the thousands of us ) to the big box stores that handle this stuff and let them know , We aren’t going to buy this anymore ...( Viral You Tube rant might not hurt either) The consumers have the Power , if the stores are informed of their loss , then they might (maybe) get some decent products once again ... Selling a product at a price point (cheap as possible, with the Most Profit ) really doesn’t work if the product is total Crap ... Something the RV industry is currently having to deal with ... :frightened:

The Logical thing to do here is make a List (post it here) of what is Good plywood and what is BAD (do not use ) plywood .... That way the members and prospective builders would be fore-warned , and we wouldn’t have to see the pics , and listen to all the whining about all those beautiful build projects turning to MUSH !!!
That or find a more Reliable alternative ...
There’s no place like Foam !

I found some fairly large voids is my quarter inch CDX ply.

It is a Georgia Pasific product, but I don't know where it is actually made. I got it at Lowe's.

How many times does it need to be said? When you buy ply from a big box store, you’re buying junk. Always buy your ply from a lumber yard. Yea, it cost more but you won't have the problems you’re having. You get what you pay for. :o

+1 on what Gage said. The only decent plywood I've found in at the BORG or the blue version is some Arauco plywood at Lowes. It is made in South America and it sells for a premium.

If you don't have a good lumberyard or specialty plywood shop in your area try asking a cabinet shop or sign shop.

That's what I'm using...I'm glad to see that an experienced builder like him judged it sound. I had some second thoughts about it, since it was tagged as interior "cabinet grade" at the store; but presanded ACX really looked good to me... flat, smooth,no discernable defects (I bought it on sale too!). I had wondered if the glue would dissolve when soaked thru with 50/50 mix poly/mineral spirits, but my test pieces came out solid. Here in the interior of Texas, marine plywood is really never seen, so I bought the best I could for the money.

In reference to my above posting concerning the plywood I am using for my build, I have some reassuring (to me) info about Arauco plywood . I only now viewed the Arauco website (should've done so before purchase ! ,> a no-brainer) and found this:
Adhesive
All AraucoPly panels are laid up with phenolic WBP glue which is suitable for exterior use.
It now seems that I've been overly worried over the suitability of this plywood for exterior use for the last 6 months. I've been expecting ply separation at any time from glue failure when I coated with solvent based polyurethane. Not so much concern now! I've used phenolic carburetor spacers on my racecar, and they resist racing fuel with no problems, so I figure that the phenolic glue in the Arauco should be impervious to solvent (and hopefully, water). A polyurethane, then enamel coating over this plywood may turn out OK after all.
