Hi all, I'm new to this site and I came across it by fluke!!! Thought that I was the only one that thought about doing a CT conversion, LOL. Wow, was I surprised, and glad, when this site popped up. So I started looking through at all the pic that everyone is posting and I see some great ideas and layouts.
Well, I bought a used 2004 6x10 for $1200.00 with a side door, two barn doors on the back and a ramp to load my bike aboard. I'm thinking that windows are first in order, with wiring and insulation being next!! Which leads me to my question, a friend gave me two windows from a pick/up box cap that are 5 ft long, is it safe to be cutting out 2 metal studs to install these?? I was thinking of welding in a piece of 1" square tubing above and below the window the full length of the window.

Welcome...I see no problem at all as long as you weld in the top and bottom suports. I installed my windows high just under the roof suport so the upper one was not required. I just will not let 4 feet of snow build up...
I like the high windows so no one can peek in and it helps clear the hot air from building up. Here are a few pic of what high mounted windows look like in and out and there are more pics if you click on my Album.

Like BC said box in the window frames with metal should be no problem
I have owned travel trailers and on those rainy days I enjoyed sitting on the couch watching the rain
so I vote for windows low enough to see out when sitting down.
my needs will be different than yours I'll carry a mobility scooter you will carrying a bike.

pete42, thanks. I had in mind to put them low enough to see out while sitting, but I'm going to put up an awning, so hope to be sitting outside most of the time, till the skitters drive me inside
Just starting the conversion, so there will be more questions to come......

Well I got the windows done!!! They are a little long but look great. Did some stud cutting and wielded in some headers and sills for reinforcements, cut out the openings and done the install. Now to do some wiring and insulating and then move on with the walls....

GLSmitty, those windows are a bit long but look great and will allow a lot of light in especially on cloudy days etc. Can you post some pics of the framing and welding you did around the windows.

Well, the windows are in and now I have started the insulation and some wiring. Hoping to finish the insulation over the Easter weekend and get the wiring all done. Here are a few pic of the progress I am making, slow as it is.

I know it seems slow to you I feel done right first time is better than doing it over.

Are you spray foaming the ribs/framing to reduce thermal bridging? If so...any pointers?

Maybe you're not even worrying about the issue though.

No, not planning to, most of my camping will be done in the warmer weather, maybe spring and fall also but doubtful of any winter camping...
