Towing/Parking your Tear in the City

Postby Freddy the Element » Wed Apr 11, 2012 10:26 am

Just was wondering what people do if they are traveling with their trailer and want to spend some time in a major city. We have a friend who lives in a very congested part of San Francisco and when we are in town we stay for a couple nights and parking is a nightmare for just our car, I can't imagine what would happen if we had a trailer as well.

Thanks!

put a couple tongue jacks on the back bumper, at least parallel parking won't be too bad then, jack it up and push it sideways into the space.

Freddy,
There used to be a campgrounds at the Presidio. As I recall it wasn't very big, maybe 35 40 sites. But very nice.

Thanks for the responses, but I guess what I'm trying to find out is what people in that situation have done. If it was me I'd probably think about parking the teardrop on a street outside the city somewhere or leave it in a garage I guess?

Yes, SF parking is awful and driving in that city is trying. If I had to go to SF and had my trailer with me, I would find a campground outside the city but near the BART transit system so I could avail myself of public transportation and leave both the car and trailer parked.

Someone mentioned the Presidio; but, the only campground I found there is a group walk-in. There is, however, a campground adjacent to Candlestick Park where you can leave your trailer and car and take a shuttle to downtown SF. It is appropriately called Candlestick RV Park.

If I were traveling to a city that I was unfamiliar with, I would learn as much as I could, getting maps and books from the Auto Club; reviewing information on the Internet; and, possibly even buying a book about the area from a local book store. I, too, would park the trailer somewhere safe and not tow it into or all over the city unless I had no other choice.

I agree with those who have advised to leave the teardrop in a safe location outside the city and either take public transportation or drive in to the city from there. I would go a step further if you are driving and will be parking in the city. Remove your belongings from the vehicle! Don't count on having things "out of sight" in the trunk being much of a crime deterrent. I worked in the auto insurance business in New York City for a few years. We had many people who had articles stolen from their locked cars. Theft claims also included car parts such as radios, rear windows, air bags and catalytic converters.

We have always left our teardrop in a campground near the city and driven in to visit. If possible, we prefer to park in a parking garage rather than use street parking as the former offers a bit more protection.

Makes sense, that's what I figured. Last time I towed a trailer was 1991 and it was just a straight shot from L.A. to San Francisco. I remember it being less of a headache than I imagined (finding parking, filling up with gas, etc.), but I never drove it in a congested area. I would not dream of taking a teardrop into a place like San Francisco or Manhattan, but once we get one I know we'll be going to Lake Tahoe and Lassen and we'll probably stop to visit friends in San Francisco on the way, so I'll start looking around for a secure place to store it when we do . . .

Thanks again.
