Diagional interior cabinets

Postby nrody » Fri Apr 20, 2012 4:31 pm

Has anyone made / designed diagional interior cabinets? Most tears I see have cabinets across the bulkhead wall. I will have a pass through door toe the galley in my tear and was wondering if diagional cabinets would provide more storage space?

I have a pass through from my galley. The idea was to be able to swivel my TV/CD player from the galley into the cabin.

Here is a picture from the cabin side. The small center doors are the pass through.

Hmm, not sure I understand what you mean by diagonal cabinets.

If you mean cabinets set at 45 degrees to the side walls, with an open space between for the pass through, its not a bad idea, but I can't recall ever seeing a teardrop set up that way.
I'm not sure they would provide more storage space, but it would allow some storage, and the pass though, while not protruding too far into the sleeping space.

I was going to put small diagonal shelves in my build, in the corners above the bed. Like you, with space being limited, I wanted to know what was best. To test out what I planned to do, I used paper and made the exact size and shape that I would have if the shelf was rectangular shaped and the space I would have if the shelf was triangular shaped. I actually took the things that I wanted to store on the shelf and sat them on the paper prototypes, so I could get an even better feel for it. What I found was that I actually ended up with less storage and more wasted space on a triangular shelf because very little would fit into the narrow side corner areas. While your plan is undoubtedly different than mine, if you take some newspaper or Kraft paper and mock up your cabinet shelf surface, you'll be able to tell if what you want to do will be adequate or not. Also, keep in mind that rectangular cupboards and shelves are more straight forward (excuse the pun) to build. I look forward to seeing what you decide!

Most valuable information . I will do cardboard mockups. I totally get what you said about the corners. Thanks for the feedback
