The most logical thing for power I can think of is to collect the solar gain from all the roadways.Should be a fairly simple upgrade once the research funding is in place, and we build/replace a ton of it every year anyway.More modern home design would reduce energy consumption. If I were to build a dream home it would be underground with a south wall out the side of a hill. That wall would be a greenhouse.Too bad the mere mention totally scares most people because they immediately think cave and run from the idea.

I have thought about that myself. You probably wouldn't have much use of a hvac system then and could save alot of money.

That's exactly how my parents house is built. Add a roof overhang to cut down on summer sun inside.

The still have an HVAC system, but it runs very little. They heat 2200 square feet with a tiny little wood stove and go through about three cords of wood a heating season.

Biggest problem is controlling mositure. If you do this, make sure you go over board draining water away from teh foundation. It's very easy to end up with humidity problems in an earth contact home.

The house we built is built into the south side of a hill. We have about 2500 square feet, heated with 3/8's of a cord of wood. In Maine.

Even if the earth around the house is bone dry... one can have moisture problems. If the concrete walls are cool, and the out side air is warm and humid, moisture will condense like on the outside of a ice chilled drink.

Making sure the shell is well insulated can help.. having the shell of the house a little warmer [which the insulation will help with] make sure to have good air flow helps of course also.

Someone needs to find a way to harness the power of Pet Drool.

Throw a pork bone to my dog and I'd be fueled up for a month...

Hydrogen is clean and efficient but it almost always needs to be made from water. The Hydrogen/Oxygen bond in water is very strong. More energy is needed to separate it than you can get out of it after.

I would mandate that Berkley live for 3 years under cap and trade; let them see how it would really work. its great on paper but in real life. better yet make it the university of colorado in Boulder, it gets cold there and to save the enviorment all dorms must be set to 60 degrees and have a set limit on the amount of power they can use. they can always buy more credits if they want heat.

They tried that here at UW-Madison back I think it was in the 80s. Over winter break the governor mandated that all the dorms be set back to 50 degrees. Well, they forgot that some of these dorms are very old, have steam radiators for heat, and weren't all that well insulated. It dipped into the negative degrees over Christmas and entire 10 story buildings froze up. All the kids' rooms were flooded. Not just the floors, the upper floors would leak down into the room below. EVERYTHING was ruined and it took a crew of I don't know how many guys, working straight over the entire christmas holiday and into the following week, fixing many thousands of leaks.

They won't be doing THAT again.

I know this was tongue in cheek, but you made me remember a stupid thought I had driving home from the gym one evening...

Why aren't all treadmills and such connected to a generator? We might as well get a return for all that sweating! Knock the price of the KW generated off of your gym membership!

Most people aren't that efficient.. I doubt most could turn over the belt on a full sized treadmill. Some equipment.. does generate their own power.. the power to operate the machine. They do generally ending up some dumping some excess energy [as heat] . but again for most people.. it is not a lot.

People could take charge of their own energy independence by installing wind or solar or a combo of both
