Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

I found me a 7x10!

Postby Partsman » Sat Apr 28, 2012 9:02 am

After work yesterday I went to look at an "Old 12 foot motorcycle trailer".

This is what followed me home!

7x10 Cargo Star with full interior, cabinets and floor already in it.
This sucker is built too. Huge channel frame, 2 5/16 ball and brakes.

I think I can put off the build thread until winter with this one.
Window, A/C, and beds is all I "need" for now.

What a great find. With only a few more things you are ready to camp!

I like that trailer.
The inside is halfway finished already. Is there any insulation in it?

I am not sure about insulation. I spent all afternoon on the floor.
Spent the afternoon removing chocks and diamond plate.
Took me a while to find the right screw bit.

Picked up some white Rustolium for this. If it ever stops raining here that is.

I am having trouble with the interior lights. They worked when it was hooked to the previous owners truck.
Not so with my truck. Then I tried using some jumper wires and my boat battery. Still no luck.

I also scored a queen size mattress. It is thicker than I wanted but free and it was in the spare bedroom so not worn out and smelly.

Awesome find. Looks like a really stout trailer.

While you have the interior walls off, you can plan for any additional wiring that you may want to run.

Oops! I meant to post that on my build thread.
What is the best fix?

The inside lights should be wired to the running lights on the trailer. Plug it into the truck and turn on your lights for the truck while the key is on. The lights inside should work. You are going to want to rewire them. Trace the wires from the lights to where they connect to the trailers wiring. They are probably just scotch locked. Remove the scotch lock and run a wire from their to your wall switch.. Then just run a power wire from your power center to the light switch. These trailers don't come with onboard batteries so the lights are always just tied into the running lights. With all the interior walls exposed it should be a very easy fix.

I noticed in a previous post that you plan to install a/c. You should also plan and run the power for this now. That most likely means that you need to make plans for 110v AC. If that's the case you will also probably want additional outlets for other uses. My Dad always said, "You can never have too many outlets." Now is the time to install them. Much will depend on your intended uses for your trailer. There is great advice on electrical systems in the electrical section of this forum.

I am planning the bear minimum for power. One 110 and a couple lighter sockets. The trailer already has lights.
I guess I should do the 110 now while the wall is apart.
