So many questions so little time 55mph HFT?

Postby NoTime » Wed May 16, 2012 2:52 pm

Hello
I live in south texas and have been lurking here for sevral months. I have been looking at campers of all types... and with the oil boom in south texas they are all way out of my price range. That being said I have a harbor freight trailer 4x8 I would like to build a teardrop on. I have a questions that i have been unable to find concreate anwsers for. If anyone can help I would be very greatfull.

#1 My tires on my 4 lug 12" HF trailer state max speed 55mph I realy want to be able to tow the trailer 85mph across texas "new speed limit on I10"...I would love to mount my 17X10" rims with 315/35/17 tires off my sold mustang "so rims and tires are not being used just taking up space for now". Problem being... A. they are 5 lug B. no where neer enough back spacing. C. I would like the TD to have wheel whells so I can make it almost as wide as the tires/rims. I am thinking if I get an axle for a 5' wide trailer with the proper hub that may solve my problems. Does anyone have sugestions on how to locate axle, hubs ,ect?

Please before I get the fuel conserned/safety people. I am pulling the TD with a brand new f150 and am a truck driver with over 1M miles under my belt. So long as the trailer is capable I will be safe.

This is a very common question here actually. many threads about it.

I have exceeded posted speed limit for extended periods of time with my HF trailer with 12" tires, and my HF trailer with 8" tires. DISCLAIMER: I am not making any recommendations, however I personally have treated those labels as if they were put there to cover the "legal butts" of Harbor Freight.

I'm not trying to play the repeat game, but....

I too... have exceeded posted speed limit for extended periods of time with my HF trailer with 12" tires. DISCLAIMER: I am not making any recommendations, however I personally have treated those labels as if they were put there to cover the "legal butts" of Harbor Freight.

OK, so call me a SA, but who's gonna cover your legal butts if something does go wrong at a 'too high' speed on the freeway ?

Chinese trailer tires are junk to begin with and while I agree the 55MPH is a CYA, exceeding that by a substantial margin, 30MPH, is really pushing it. And when they fail at that speed you will be spreading a lot of junk over the highway. If you want to travel at that speed buy another axle rims and use automotive tires rated for speed.

Thats kinda where I was at my mustang tires are Z rated ..Not to mention the hubs on the HF trailer dont seem perfect they wobble a little...it seems that they were made ...hmm in china??lol SO wo we have sugestions for making my mustang rims/tires work on the HF trailer with where to get a new axle that may work with proper back spacing ?? I also read that the farther you extend the axle past the springs the lower the load rating becomes.. Shouldnt be a problem going to try to stay around 1000lbs and plan to use a 2000lb axle?

I am hoping to make sevral trips from Corpus Christi to Phoenix area.. To camp and see my mom and as mentioned earyler the speed limit from San Antionio to El Paso is 85mph on I10 and thats about 1/2 of the trip..570 miles of the 1100 to get there. I like to drive but thats a long ride and would like to make it as fast as possable.

No time,

I have a 2000 lb axle under my TD and it's more than 1000lbs. I have some problem with bounce and rebound. I have taken out 2 leafs of springs and it has helped some, but not all of the problem. My point is, that going with too heavey of an axle can cause some unwanted problems that can be bad at high speeds. My next move is too try shocks to tame then bounce ptoblem.
