12v DC wiring Do I have it right?

Postby atahoekid » Thu May 31, 2012 1:49 am

After reading the stickies on this sight about 12v wiring, I think I've got it straight. Not having messed with electrical much, it is the nomenclature that confuses me the most. But here's what I'm planning. Please tell me if I've got something wrong. I realize there are probably a hundred different variations, and I could probably spend a ton of money on it, but I just want to know if what I want to do is right AND SAFE!!! :worship: :worship:

My biggest question is can I make the distribution block and the ground bus from terminal strips with the terminals jumped together? I think I saw that in one thread but I couldn't quite tell from the pics. If not, what's the best way to go?

FYI, the wires from battery to distribution block and battery to ground bus are 10 gauge. Wire from distribution block to each of the items and back to the ground bus are 14 gauge. I will keep the battery charged up using a battery tender between uses and I may hook in a solar charge controller and panel.

If I've got it totally wrong, can someone point me in the right direction? Clear pics are appreciated.

Thanks all!!!
Mel

Maybe a bit of overkill with the 30A fuse and an isolator switch but that looks okay to me.

The use of a master 30A fuse seems a bit redundant but can't hurt, and you should size fuses in anticipation of the load on each circuit, i.e. the circuit to the Sirius receiver is 5A and the inline fuse to the inverter is 80A on 4 ga cable which is Morningstar's recommendation.

A rather fuzzy picture of my not so fireproof electrical box that shows me using a terminal bar to return all the grounds and then to the battery.

There is also this style fuse panel with its own ground bar incorporated in its construction...

A 400 watt inverter is going to draw roughly 33 amps. Your battery, wiring, and fusing must be able to support that current draw.

You may want to reconsider that part of the "equation".

Gus

Thanks for the replies. I feel lots better now about the layout. Ordered all my electrical parts last night. Next it's onto planning the wiring of the trailer lights and brakes. Time to do more reading and research. I figure it should be easier than the 12v dc. That had me doubting myself from the day I started thinking about this build. Thanks again and cheers!
