Powder coating???

Postby Tamarack Lady » Mon Jun 11, 2012 12:24 pm

Long time lurker/dreamer...had hope to build in the fall and joined then but elderly parents became priority. Anyway, trailer almost finished and am planning a ten hour and forty eight minute road trip to buy from Frank Bear (great guy!).
I am considering either powder coating or using por 15 and then having it painted. What would you experts recommend??
Thanks in advance!! Tamarack Lady
PS.. Have learned so much from you all!!
PPS..will do pictures of build! : :D

I'm not familiar with por 15, but everything that I have bought that was powdercoated tended to fade and go flat after extended exposure to sunlight. That included some DIY trailers and a metal truck bed cover. I would recommend a high gloss conventional paint system of some sort. I'm partial to oil based paint on exterior metal.

Por 15, Dom 16, or Chassis Saver are all awesome products as long as you topcoat them. The will NOT hold up to sunlight. My vote is for the Por 15.

Thanks to you both! The powder coating is much more expensive here so with your advice I will use the por 15 and then have it painted to match my roof. Getting excited!!

I had the frame rhino lined at a local place before I put the body on it. It looks really good. Only time will tell how it holds up to use.
