I work in the Marketing & Communications department of a pretty big company that nobody's heard of.

If we come across someone who is in any way using one of our company logos, names, images, etc, we turn it over to the legal department. It does not matter how big or (more common) how small they are. That's simply part of my job. :(

Basically, any use of an image that is clearly a product of a certain company cab be said to "dilute the value" of the company and/or its products.

Sorry to say, if I worked for Coleman and stumbled upon an ad for your mug, I'd have to call out the dogs! And they can get all kinds of :x

If I were in your shoes, I would DEFINITELY remove the logos. I might also replace one or two of the images with those from another brand. I might even do some color replacement. Like change the color of the gas tank on the stove from red to orange, or something. Just make the line a little blurry, at least.

By the way -- I love it! It's way cool !!!

VW of America is a thorn in the side of the vintage VW community. For some reason, using a picture of a bus is alright , but death to you if you show a VW logo on the front. I don't understand it. VW put the logo on there. It's part of the vehicle. It's free advertising. Why can't it show?

Most just replace it with a peace symbol.

Nice mug Paul!

Coleman very actively protects it's copyrighted materials including images of their products. I've done work for the ICCC and all of the artwork has to be approved. They wouldn't allow us to use any of the currently available logos but old ones were accepted. Use of the parallelogram is a big no-no to them. Even the images of the lanterns used on the annual member patches had to be approved. Each approval was for a specific design to go on a specific item or items and there had to be a known number of items being made.

I don't believe that all of the replica decal makers have approval from Coleman and my guess is that since it's helping out the collecting community they just turn a blind eye to them, this is just speculation on my part. I'll be interested to hear what response you get from Coleman. I used to believe in getting approval for things but I've learned that asking for forgiveness is much easier. :D

Re: Comment Please - New Mug Design

Postby parnold » Sat Jun 16, 2012 10:22 pm

Well, the consensus seems to be that Coleman if, and or when they found out would not like my mug since it was clearly their appliances complete with logos displayed. I have now revamped the mug, with a duracamp stove, and a radiant lantern. I don't think either logo is even visible, and I believe both companies no longer exist. If anyone knows differently, please let me know.

That looks great Paul. I know some guys that collect Akron lanterns (long out of business) that would flip over that design. Nickle is always a winner

Dura-Camp was made in Japan, and was pretty much a straight knock off of a popular US brand. From what I can find they are no longer made either.

I would think about making replacement logo with it flipping the bird. Nothing like a snappy salute.

As pictured that is a mug for a left handed person. If your right handed the logo faces the drinker. I always look for mugs that SHOW the logo to everyone else while I drink from it. Both of them look great.

Re: Comment Please - Contact from Coleman

Postby parnold » Wed Jun 20, 2012 9:46 pm

I sent an email to Coleman last week, explaining exactly what I was doing with the mug, and asked if I could use photos of their lanterns and stoves. I asked if I needed to obscure the logos. I received a response today, saying that my email had been forwarded to their legal department. Three business days to tell me that it's being sent to someone else now.

Just checked....2nd line..."including images"

The website specifically is referring to material on their website. The photo's are not from their website.

I've sent them a note. I'll probably get a canned response, but we'll see.

Did you ever hear back from Coleman? Just curious.
