It should burn yellow with lots of flames until the generator gets warmed up sometimes depending upon outside temp it might take a minute or two. I learned not to rush the process. After flame settles down turn lever down. You might have to turn the valve down to get the flame to burn blue. Give the tank a few pumps and it should be good to go. IMHO stoves like lanterns each have a different personality. Are there flames any place other than the burner? Black on the generator spring is normal, if a lot of carbon is present, you might have to give it a good soaking in vinegar or citric acid. I use 1 pack of non sweetened kool-aid lemonade and a couple of cups boiling water. Let soak until cool and use steel wool on spring and rod being careful not to bend wire on rod.
