New Continental Cargo trailer

Postby bigbendhiker » Wed Jun 20, 2012 4:14 pm

I picked up my new 5x10 Continental Cargo trailer today. Here are a few pictures. I had them install 2 - 15x30 sliders with screens, the side door with RV latch and brakes.

I'm on vacation next so it will be time to get to work. :hammer:

Thanks for looking and thanks for any suggestions.

Scott,

What a beautiful looking CT you have! Congratulations. Do you plan to tow it with the Jeep in the photos? What is the roof height inside? Sorry for all the questions I just like seeing new builds here. Keep us posted on your progress.

Very nice CT! You ought to be real proud of it. I can't wait to see the conversion begin.

I achieved my first goal with the trailer. I was able to fit it in the garage. It barely fit. When I first looked at a similar trailer on the dealer's lot it had 14" wheels. Mine was delivered with 15" wheels. I had to adjust the garage door opener to make the door open a little more.

Don, yes I am planning to tow it with the Jeep pictured. I'll have to measure the interior height. I think it's around 5'4" or so.

About a month ago I was looking at futons at Ikea for the trailer. They had an inexpensive one for $169. I think it will work for my needs. Today after I picked up the trailer, I went to Ikea to pick one up and the price was now $119 for the frame and mattress. I couldn't get a Thermarest and sleeping bag for that much. I put it in the trailer and brought it home.

Made my first modification to the trailer. I picked up a wheeled jack at Tractor Supply to make it easier to move the trailer into position in the garage. The wheel's not great, but I think it will work for now.

Scott,

Couldn't you have bought a wheel to fit your original jack? I found one for mine at my local trailer supply store. Granted it isn't a great fit to the jack but it works.

Don,

I could have swapped out the sand pad for a wheel on the factory jack, but I think I really need both. We have a 2 and a half car garage with a 2 car wide garage door. One of the requirements of me getting a trailer was that both vehicles still had to fit in the garage along with the trailer. In order to get the trailer into the "half portion" of the garage it took me about 15 minutes of manually jockeying it into place similar to parallel parking into a really tight spot. I would extend the wheel jack to move the trailer, then retract it and extend the sand pad to temporarily park it while I walked to the back of the trailer to check clearances. I kept repeating this process until it was where I wanted it. When the wheel jack was extended the trailer would move on its own if I was not physically holding it in place. Good thing I don't have to move it very frequently. :?

Scott,

That makes sense and you made the right choice. It's interesting how we all have our quirks with regards to our CT's, be it storing it, towing it, camping in it, etc. That's what is so great about this forum, so many ideas shared allowing us to pick and choose those that might work for us and our individual situations.

This might be of interest to you:http://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-trailer-dolly-37510.html I bought one for ease of moving both my CT and my 16.5' Jayco TT. We keep our Jayco (when not in use) at a rented covered storage facility. I am absolutely horrible about backing up with a trailer, any trailer, especially into tight spaces. Our rented storage facility is fairly tight so I get the Jayco as close as I can then unhook it and use the trailer dolly to get it in to perfect position. It is far easier to roll the trailer around with the bigger wheels of the dolly than the little jack wheel, and when you think you're close you can park it on the jack foot and go check (thanks to the long tiller type handle of the dolly it is easy to cam it up to move the trailer then cam it down to park on the jack foot). The price is reasonable and the convenience is great.

Wheel chocks are nice to have, even if you get the orange plastic sets of two at wally world. Then you'd not be having that rolling issue .
I even use a jack wheel chock sometimes if I'm on a steeper incline.

Don,

Thanks for the idea. I have a Northern Tool that is closer to me than Harbor Freight. They have them on sale for $49.99. I just called and they have them in stock. It comes with a 1 7/8" ball, so I'll have to swap it over to a 2" ball. I went to Lowe's yesterday and bought some lumber, insulation and supplies to start the conversion. When I got home I had to move the loaded trailer in 100 degree heat and it was much more difficult than when it was empty. I'll be buying the dolly. Thanks again. :D

If reasonably sized just means it WILL fit in the garage then My 24' footer has room to spare. :R
