Right there with ya. Dont own, have never owned a RV or camper of any type. Alway used a tent. Always wanted a camper, and teardrop seems to be the best fit for what I want. Dont need a huge camper. But am still in the dreaming stage, but started the planning.

Check craigslist often!

I just purchased a started retro fit of 1936 (so says the title) teardrop. It has the new walls up and skinned and the trailer rolls, which is a big part of the start up. The cost was good and it really helps jump start the project.

thanks for the welcome y'all :D

I've been looking closely at the Grumman style TD. I don't really like the idea of a metal roof cause it's hot where I live (Florida Panhandle) and I like to camp where there is not usually an electrical hookup. I've been looking at the woodies and think they look really cool 8) It will probably be another year before I can build anything so I guess I have lots of time to read and research.

After looking at several build journals I decided to build a model.

I like this profile. I started with the grumman profile but modified it a bit to include a tongue box to hold the AC which I can only use when I'm not camping in the boonies, but I'm dreaming so what the heck :)

And then decided to straighten the back to save on material for the hatch.

I like to bring two coolers when camping, one for food and one for drinks. So I needed to have room for them in the galley. I also hate hauling water jugs around so I included a water container for 16 gals. That's enough I think for coffee, cooking, washing dishes and showers for 2 people for a week. And since I have 2 cast iron dutch ovens I had to include a place to carry them too. The black spot on the counter is a mockup for a sink. I don't like carrying a tub of wash water to dump it and I don't like a muddy site. So I can have a hose attached to the sink to drain the water away from the camper. Where I camp the only restriction with dumping greywater is not to let it run into the river.

For hot water I like the Coleman Hot water on demand http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Water-On-Demand-Portable-Water-Heater/dp/B0009PURE0.
Thanks to someone on the forum I found a video of how to make a fantastic camp shower using the coleman set up. I already have a 2 burner camp stove and much kitchen gear but will probably get a couple of tables. I also have a propane lantern and a propane distribution tee like this one http://www.amazon.com/Texsport-14220-2-Piece-Distribution-Tree/dp/B003ZZC000/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1340758628&sr=1-2&keywords=propane+tree so I will be bringing a propane tank in the truck that I will use to haul the trailer. I have an idea of using a tarp garage like this set up http://www.amazon.com/ShelterLogic-Canopy-Enclosure-Frame-White/dp/B000OQ216Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1340758378&sr=1-1&keywords=portable+garages+and+shelters only with screening to keep out the bugs.

Here are some pictures of the interior showing the head and foot cabinets. I plan on making the teardrop large enough to fit a queen size mattress. I also decided to add a mockup of the Fantastic Fan since so many people included it in their teardrops :)

and a couple more photos of the model.

24tesia,
I owned a 16ft travel trailer briefly years ago but didn't even use it to camp it when someone stole the fridge out of it. Ended up giving it to my dad who used it for storage. I didn't camp much then but have been camping for years now in a tent and am getting too old to sleep on the ground :?

Jeffrayy,
Don't know if I can use a used trailer since I want a 10ft x 5'3" wide trailer. But I look occasionally anyway :)

Yep I think I have the bug and trying to infect anyone who will stay still long enough

This is the second model  had to rebuild when I discovered I hadn't left enough room for the hatch to clear the cabinets
