I was thinking the exact same thing Friday night. It doesn't happen often, but we've had one hurricane come through here in the 9 years we've been in Maryland. Friday evening the wind started howling and tree limbs started falling, power was flickering on and off and then the driving rain and I was sitting here looking out the window toward the garage thinking how nice it will be to have that bug-out vehicle in the event we ever need it!!

Becky, we live in a hurricane prone area , EVAC is a yearly consideration ( the wife has had a bag packed since June1 ) ... Problem with EVAC is a million others are on the road , so all the motels, places to stay are filled up down the highway ... supplies run short .... Tempers flare ... Not Nice !!
With our little EVAC trailer , we can take off for parts unknown and still have a place to stay/sleep/hang out , or if we decide to stay home and ride it out , roll the camper into the “bunker” garage , and we can camp out , off the grid ... Fully stocked with all the gear , we should be good for a while ... that and a little extra shopping , which is how the wife always chooses to amuse herself while on EVAC...

Here in northern Alabama the only thing we really have to run from are tornados, and you generally don't get enough warning to make it practical to hitch up a trailer. I can imagine political situations that would lead to what is politely called "civil unrest," but we are well armed and possessed of a fearsome reputation in our inner city neighborhood, The Command Post is just for fun :)

that storm that came thru friday was not very nice! it was worse than hurricane irene!! we now have a tree down in the front yard. i drove around and i saw more damage from this storm than irene. now on my way out of the drive leading to the main road, i happen to notice a blue thing up in the trees. i had to do a double take on that one. its a big piece of blue foam. hehehe we had tacked on a piece of the foam over a plastic box (childrens toy climbing thing) out back for the roof, the boxer uses it for his dog house. anyway that foam/roof blew off and up and was gone. took a couple tries to get it down out of the trees. had to drive a pick up down the road and with some of the pool net poles and standing on the pickup they managed to get the foam back home. anyways, we did find a few other pieces of foam out and about, but they were all on the ground, easy enough to pick and and walk home. now my foamie and the shell of the second one is still standing right where they belong.

and don't forget gpw...if you ever have to evac and decide to go north, you always have a spot here for you and yours (and don't forget the dog). :wine:

It's getting bad here, too. This year the bugout circumstance might be fire, in which case the tear would be great. Usually around here, we are dodging severe storms and tornadoes. Neither of those is a situation where I want to be in a small, light travel trailer.

The storm that came thru on Friday was called a derecho.

My daughter will be without power for an estimated 5 days!!!

Intense Storms Called a "Derecho" Slam 700 Miles of the US
Kristina Pydynowski
By Kristina Pydynowski, Senior Meteorologist
Jun 30, 2012; 4:09 PM ET

A tree toppled by severe storms sits atop a car in Washington's Dupont Circle neighborhood on Saturday, June 30, 2012 in Washington, D.C. (AP Photo/Jessica Gresko)

A "super derecho" of violent thunderstorms left a more than 700-mile trail of destruction across the Midwest and mid-Atlantic on Friday, cutting power to millions and killing eleven people.

More than 450 damaging wind reports were received by NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) as the derecho took roughly 12 hours to race from northern Indiana to the southern mid-Atlantic coast.

A derecho is defined as a widespread and long-lived wind storm that accompanies rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. The most severe derechos are given the adjective "super."

Winds gusted to 91 mph (equal to that of a category 1 hurricane) at the Fort Wayne International Airport, Ind., Friday afternoon.

As the derecho maintained its violent nature, an 81 mph gust was then measured at Tuckerton, on the southern New Jersey coast, early Saturday morning.

Downed trees dominated the damaging wind reports and led to the deaths of 11 people, according to Fox News.

One of the multiple trees that crashed into homes in Springfield, Va., killed a 90-year-old woman as she was sleeping in her bed, according to the Associated Press.

A few hours earlier, a falling tree outside of North Middletown, Ky., (located east-northeast of Lexington) killed a man who was attempting to clear some tree limbs off a road.

Two boys died by a pine tree fell onto a tent at Parvin State Park, N.J.

Damage on Friday was not confined to downed trees. Power poles were also snapped, while some structures sustained damage. At least four semi-trucks were blown over by the winds on I-75 between Findlay and Bluffton, Ohio.

States of emergencies have been declared in Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio. With 2.5 million in the dark, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell stated that his state experienced its largest non-hurricane power outage in history.

Friday's super derecho was triggered by a ripple in the jet stream and fueled by the intense heat that caused Washington, D.C., to set a June record high and Columbia, S.C., to break its all-time record on Friday.

Derechos typically strike the lower Midwest states once every year, according to the SPC. The occurrence of derechos, however, are quite rare across the mid-Atlantic, south of Philadelphia. On average, this region endures a derecho once every four years.

One of the most recent significant derechos to slam the United States occurred on May 8, 2009. This weather phenomena traveled more than a thousand miles in 24 hours from southeastern Kansas to the southern spine of the Appalachian Mountains.

Destruction from the May 2009 derecho totaled millions of dollars with numerous injuries and several deaths reported.

One main difference between the May 2009 derecho and Friday's is the number of tornadoes spawned. Forty-five tornadoes were sighted in May 2009, while there was only one unconfirmed report of a tornado on the ground in Newcomerstown, Ohio, Friday afternoon.

Winds in the strongest derechos can top 100 mph. The derecho that tore through Wisconsin and Lower Michigan on May 31, 1998, produced a 128 mph wind gust in eastern Wisconsin.

Additional severe thunderstorms will threaten parts of the Midwest and mid-Atlantic later today, but a repeat of Friday's widespread destruction is not expected.
