442 before and after pics.

First off....thanks Kirk for this nice 442! I picked it up at the Dam this spring. The steel parts had quite a bit of rust on them, and the lid had a piece of iron sitting on it for some time and galvanic action pitted it. However, it's a nice stove and I'll use it regularly. 442's were made for maybe 1 year, maybe 2 starting in 1963. It's an aluminum bodied stove. It's nice and light, but wants to get bent easily, and the raw aluminum will get stained from acidic foods. Probably why they only made them for such a short period of time, but that's just my opinion.

Lots of time with degreaser and a fingernail brush, some bead blasting, a new latch from Rockler and rattle can paint job and it's done! I still need the decal for the diamond shaped badge on the exterior of the lid. this stove is the mate to Scotts 443, the 3 burner model. Doug

Wow! that cleaned up nice. Nothing wrong with a little experience showing on the lid. Looks just as good as any of your other restorations,

That's amazing. Most people would have seen that as a hopeless case and chucked it on the trash heap. You gave it a 2nd life and it's beautiful.

Doug - fantastic job on the resto. These little aluminum stove are starting to be a rare find. Indeed its difficult to clean the aluminum - takes a lot of elbow grease and polishing, but well worth it. Now find it's 3 burner mate and you'll have a prized pair
BTW - there is a sticker that goes in the inside of the lid like this

Scott....that is the 442A....those were the smooth sided boxes, much more rare...this one has the dimples on it it's a straight 442...it has the badge on the exterior of the lid, but the badging on the interior would have just been a Coleman logo type sticker. Honestly...I didn't even think about it till I checked out the before pics and I can see the ghosting of where it was...there was one on it, Coleman logo only (no instructions), must have been a water slide decal, I don't see how a peel and stick item would work on that dimpled surface. There was nothing for me to clean off of it like a sticker. Is yours a sticker or a decal? I'd imagine, what you have is what I'd need. It's all a learning experience on some of this stuff. Doug

My mistake - after looking at yours and mine - then checking the model # - I have a 442A! the sides look smoother from the pictures bit it actually mico dimpled on the exterior - but the inside is smooth and polished. from your picts - the 442 has the same embossing as the 443 - inside and out. If you look at the 443 three burner - you'll see that there is no sticker - but rather it was painted on the inside of the lid

My stove is made of the same material as your 443 and there is a ghosting of the sticker. Whatever you have on your 443 is what I need on mine. I didn't know that you had both.... It's kinda fun to get the "family" of stoves. I'm working on that on my AGM's...got the 57, the 44...now need the 55 and 56 to complete the family for the group of the same year. Doug

the diamond on the front is painted Coleman red - same as the side wings with the center being a small Coleman decal with the colors reversed (the Coleman in lettering in red on a white background with the lantern also in reversed color) If you are good at stenciling - then paint the inside the same as regular Coleman decal just above the two rivits
