Introducing the ol 49er

Postby armymike » Wed Aug 08, 2012 12:31 am

Hi, Mike here with his new toy a home built 1949 teardrop. Call me crazy because I drove 2200 miles round trip last weekend from San Diego to Vancouver, WA to get this thing. My girlfriend couldn't go so my cousin was my shotgun partner and co-pilot on the journey which was fun catch up time. Blues and Rock-n-roll kept us going on the 20 hour each way road trip. As I've read on other threads, I was asked, "What is it?" two young ladies thought it was little refrigerator trailer, was getting thumbs up from passerbys, at rest stops folks would walk up to it and it was a great conversation piece. Will paint this galvenized steel baby (solid as a tank) one color (battleship grey) even though I'm Army and cleaning it up. Adding new carpet, and some rewiring. Really looking forward to meeting fellow teardroppers at events and campsites. Bob and his wife Beverly were the sellers, American Tires in Portland took care of me with tires and bearing inspection.

Welcome to the forum!

That's a cool old TD. Complete with vintage gear in the galley too, I especially like that cooler and stove. Is the trailer metal or wood framed?

I went camping last week and someone asked me if my Silver Shadow was a SHOWER? I can't imagine what they were thinking, unless it is a horizontal shower thingy (wouldn't that be a tub)??? I had the tubes running in the window for the AC at the time, but still... a SHOWER? That was the weirdest one for me!

Anyway, welcome, and your tear is great! So is your coke cooler!!!

Bob the previous owner made the rails for a canopy he was working on. Not sure if I'll build upon them. More than likely won't. I'm going to add a "Kilroy was here" on the front and a bomber nose art pin-up with a name on the drivers side trailer door. The trailer has the wood base but all the metal is galvanized steel. It has a thick hard foam insulation and the interior is has a newer rug lining. Thanks for the comments and replys. I think my first trip is going to be at the beach then Sequoia Nat'l Park

Mike post it in the forsale/wanted that you want that type of propane tank with the pic and I'm sure one of the CA people may be able to help you with it.

Nice find.

Congrats on the old camping gear as well.

If you ever rebuild anything on it or upgrade it, you should start a thread in the Build Journals area.

GL and thanks for serving.
