One lucky brat. And some stupid parents.

My last trip to Yellowstone back in the 80s I stopped at an over look of a nice meadow Valley. A ranger was there watching an idiot about 200 yards away less than 10 feet away from a bison taking its pictures. Ranger just says. "If he gets away safely I will then chew his ass out " I just had to nod in agreement. Was best to not and try to yell at said idiot to get away.

I had a good talk with a ranger at Yellowstone and the stupid things folks do. Three employees were caught on the closed circuit cameras walking up to Old Faithful and peeing into it, fired and prosecuted, an individual was gored by a bison the week previous to our visit, plus the numerous burns from being scalded from folks straying off the path. I suppose we could do an entire thread on stupid things people do

We were there a few years back, at the viewpoint overlooking 'grand canyon of the Yellowstone'. There was a tree on the other side of the safety barrier with limbs hanging out over, well.....nothing, and some genius was hanging out there over the abyss while his friend snapped his picture.

Years ago we were at Simonton Cove on San Miguel Island (off the coast of Santa Barbara). We walked by a big "rock" and decided it was a "photo op". So three of us stood by the "rock" while one got ready to snap the picture.

Then the "rock" moved. It was a huge bull elephant seal.

We quickly got over our desire to have our picture taken by that particular "rock". Next time we'll look a bit more closely. It's surprising how much a big bull elephant seal can look like a rock. No kidding.

Cheers,

Gus

Years ago [in the 1960s] , one of my Aunt and Uncles from the Rochester, NY area had
a neighbor family who took a trip out west. While visiting Yellowstone NP they lost a
young son when he fell into a super-heated thermal pool and was scalded to death. I
didn't/don't know the neighbors, but I still get a huge uneasy feeling even now, just recalling it,
40-50+ years after first hearing that it happened.

Life and children are precious, guide them wisely.

Back in the 50s/60s we lived close to Yellowstone. So close everyone just called it "The Park". Once we was up there before I turned 10 yo. My sisters and I and maybe some cousins was running around some grassy area when we stopped for gas or something and we ran into some warmish water. Luckily we played it smart and headed back to the car. We heard all the news about people getting scalded there and we did not mess with it.

In the 80s I and some friends went back packing in the south west corner of it. On a ridge you could see on one side a creek of hot water. On the other side was a cold water creek. The joined and there was a 10-15 foot water falls into a water pool and it was all water pool temp water. We went skinny dipping. Man that was a whole lot of perfect temp water. There are many rivers that don't have that much water.

Northern Mn watched a family approach a bull moose, I think they were trying to pet it or feed it , dad had his hand held out to it. Maybe he wanted to teach it to shake. Glad it was mid summer and they were not in breeding mode.
