Is 80" bed length enough? I'm a 6'3" stomach sleeper.

Postby kludge » Wed Sep 19, 2012 9:09 am

I thought I'd ask the tall people here if an 80" length for the bed is long enough.

I'm 6'3" and I'm a stomach sleeper. No I absolutely can't fall asleep on my back, side sleeping is a possibility.

I sleep on a queen mattress at home and my feet/toes hang over the end of the bed while sleeping. No footboard on my bed either, they totally kill my ability to get a good night's sleep.

Last night I laid out a rectangle of tape on the floor to see if I could live with an 80" length between the head wall and the foot wall, but it looks like I will be crashing into the walls at both ends.

So I ask you, are there any 6'3" stomach sleepers in here with any advice?

The 80" length would still give me enough room on the other side of the wall for my square 7 gallon Reliance water jugs and still fit on the floor of an 8' trailer. And 84" to 86" in bed length would mean the water jugs don't fit on the floor, so that's my dilemma.

I've thought about stretching it to 9', but the profiles I'm drawing just don't look right.

Why not design the same amount of foot space at the foot of the bed that you have in your house?

In other words, if you think your feet hang over the end of your queen sized bed by 6", leave 6" of space at the foot of the bed in your trailer.

You don't have to change the profile of the trailer, just move the bulkhead wall back by 6".

I don't know what style trailer you are building but if it has a rounded front you will pick up a few inches of headroom as the curve opens up toward the top.

Well, 6' 3 is 75 inches. Is five inches enouch split between head and foot for you to be comfortable on the 80" queen? All mattresses are 80 long except cal king which is 84. Unless younwant a custom made mattress that is extra long but not king wide, i think mikes idea sounds the best. Give your self a littl more room in the cabin so the mattress doesnt completely fill it.

Mike, leaving an extra 6" at the foot of the bed was my first thought, but then the water jugs won't fit. Because of the weight (7 gallons) I was trying to keep them on the floor.

Woodbutcher, I hadn't thought of that. That would be possible if I splice sheets of plywood together for the extra length of the side wall (or if I can find 4x10 sheets). But that also eliminates the cheap and simple profiles. Usually that space is used for electrical or storage, but headroom might be a good option instead.

nevadatear, 75" doesn't count the length of my flippers. Or allow me to raise my arms.

I think i need to find 6" at foot and find some way to not confine the space at the head.

Maybe I could do a His and Hers side of the trailer with a split bulkhead? and put the water jugs on her side. But that eliminates all the space for a cooler or camping box.

My wife suggested I sleep diagonally and she'll squeeze in what's left.

What are the disadvantages of eliminating the bulkhead entirely? Water don't need a place to sleep inside, except maybe in January.

It sounds like you are looking at an 8' long profile.

If I were you I'd consider stretching the profile, or chosing a different profile.

Try the Modernistic for example. It's 10' long. Or stretch a Generic Benroy. It can handle 9' without a problem.

Also check in Angib's Design Library for lots of other profiles that work... http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/t ... tear00.htm

My first tear was 6'3" long for the bed area. I'm 5'11" but. I sleep on my back and with two pillows. So when I relaxed my feet went forward and hit the wall. Drove me crazy. I built another trailer just because of that. Made me feel like I was sleeping in a box.
The mattress I have now is 80" or 6'.6". long inside. but I also have another two inches of cabin 1" at the head and 1" at the foot. Total is 6'.8" It took from the galley area but I get a good nights sleep.
Just what bugged me most about my last trailer. :D

Check out a Kenskill profile. They look great at 9 feet long. The originals were 4 feet wide but I've seen a couple that were 5 feet and they still look great.

I'm basically building a Benroy profile... I stretched it 8" to make sure I'd be comfortable inside. I don't think it affects the profile at all. You need to be comfortable!

Good luck.

Howdy Kludge, I'm 6'2" and there was no way I could make the 8' length work. A queen mattress length of 80" was a necessity so we went with 4'x10'x4.5'. Stretching a design for the extra room is pretty easy compared to squishing your wife into a corner. ;)

Cheers,

Dave
