mill finish aluminum VS anodized aluminum

Postby Richard Miller » Sun Oct 21, 2012 3:21 pm

Can someone point out the pros and cons of these two types of aluminum ? I'm to that point in my build and I can get 4 -4x10 sheets of .040 mill finished aluminum for $262 +tax here in Lubbock, or I can order the same size and thickness anodized satin finish aluminum for $545+tax, and the wait will be around 5 days.
Thanks in advance, Richard

I used anodized aluminum. The anodizing adds stiffness so bending on tight curves is harder. The main benefit is that it is stain-resistant. You don't have to worry about fingerprints, bird droppings or tree sap staining your aluminum (unless you don't clean the aluminum within 3-5 days.)

One of the things I was wondering is if I go with the mill finish, can i polish it and then put some type of wax or other applied finish to keep it looking fresh or will the mill finish oxidize quickly ? If it can be polished to a nice shine how often does it need to be repolished ?

I'm also considering having the flames of my car copied by one of these vinyl wrap places and applying them to the side of the trailer.

Another question, does anodized aluminum come in other finishes other than the satin that the guy offered me?

Thanks Tom, did your aluminum come polished like that or did you do it?
Also, did you buy that in Dallas, and where if you did, maybe I can get this supplier to get the same for me

Richard,
I purchased my aluminum from Regal Plastics - a supplier of materials to make signs. The aluminum came as you see it. I believe it was called "mirror bright" finish. It has a shine to it but is not as clear or reflective as polished aluminum. I do put a light carnauba wax on it about once a year but other than that I just wash it right before we go camping. I paid around $150 for each 4' x 10' sheet.
Take care,
Tom.

Hi Tom,
I looked up the Regal Plastics site and and have it saved to my favorites.
I also did a search on anodizing and found out that besides the stain resistance, it 's main purpose is corrosion resistance, it was first used in the 20's to protect the aluminum on sea planes from corrosion.

I really like the looks of your trailer, but I also think the dull aluminum has a look that makes the trailer look like it might have just been pulled out of a barn after being stored the last 60-70 years.
That's my delema, I like both looks.
With the cost factored in, and the fact that my trailer will be under cover except while being used I'm leaning towards the mill finish, I just don't want to be disappointed with my decision later.
I'm thinking that if I buff up a mill finish to a nice shine and then I let it weather naturally it might be the best of both looks.

Anyone else want to give me their opinion ?

Richard
