portable garage

Postby jeff0520 » Thu Oct 25, 2012 10:21 pm

Hello everyboidy,
I have realized I have a problem on my build project. I had intended to build the Command Post inside a Portable Garage tent in the back yard. The problem is that I really did not fully grasp how big my design has grown. I finished one of my wall profiles today, and realized my overall height is close to 9 feet tall once the walls are up. My portable garage is something like 3 feet too short!

The profile wont even fit inside leaning against the wall with the bottom edge on the ground, let alone the extra 2 feet it will be when in place on the trailer. This critter is going to be awe inspiring when it's done, but for now, it's a problem!
I had thought when I was rerady to raise walls I could put the chassis on jack stands, and pull the axle and springs out and drop the frame down to just a couple inches off the ground and be ok. NOT EVEN CLOSE! right now I'm working on the theory that I can get some electrical conduit from the big orange box, and use an automotive tailpipe expander and flare the ends to make some three foot leg extensions to raise the roof. Does anyone have any experiance with this sort of thing? Any suggestions?
thanks

Well, the electrical conduit idea seems to have worked :)

I used PVC to raise a shade awning.. apparantly I didn't tie it down properly as a big gust of wind bent the aluminum poles and brought it down in to a pile of scrap. The legs held up fine but it over stressed the fittings that held the poles together. Not that it would have helped, but I now want a tailpipe expander. :-)

Be sure to tie it all down really well against the upcoming winter winds and storms! :rainy:

Well, there are 4 screw anchors 15 inches into hard ground, but I intend to add a couple more. I'm also lucky that the portable garage is right behind the house, and is sheilded from the prevailing winds that way, and a line of trees and high privit hedge cuts down on wind the other way. Hopefully that will be enough. :worship:

$10 at Harbor Freight :D Worked like a charm, but be prepaired to either crank it down with an impact gun, or crank the expander with a long breaker bar and hold the pipe with a BIG pipe wrench to keep it from turning on you. Inch and a half electrical conduit takes some force to stretch out.

Not a bad price. Also wanted to warn that mine did not lift up against its restraints, rather it twisted violently. Mine was square so if yours is more rectangular, you might not have the same forces working against it, but for safety sake, add a few ropes to hold against twisting.

Duly noted! Thanks for the warning. Mine is more of a trapiziod, with the walls at an angle, about a foot and a half wider at the base than where it turns for the roof
