Slow,

Support is always a good thing, and distractions are often a better numbing agent than Novocaine. Sometimes, it's good just to know where you can go to write back and forth with good people. That's one of the things I'm glad about.

By the way, what's a corrobyi? I've never heard of or have seen anything like that before. I'm guessing it's a vegetable?

I went out to the workshop to weld the plates on the ends of the 3x2 RHS. Forget about trying to weld, just cutting the 2" wide strip with the drop saw was impossible. I will try and cut the pieces when its dark and then hopefully weld them on. I had a go at swatting the filthy beasts but I really need a badminton racket to attack them with. They are worse than yesterday. They hurt like a red hot needle is stabbing into you.

I find it a nice place to get away and relax. Kinda like pulling up around a campfire. Got something on your mind or a problem someone will offer support or suggestions. Sometime a swift kick in tushy. Sometimes your the one offering the support.
Its a nice place,

with talk like that maybe you should move to another country I have been half way around the world
believe me you would not like living anywhere else this country USA is the only place I want to be.

depressed; I'm not depressed, I have had a good life and I'm living a good life.

I had the support of a good family they didn't so much give me money as they pointed me in the right direction they more or less kept me on the right path.
there has been times that I have helped others either by being there as this forum does for most of us or by slipping a few dollars into someone's pocket.
not rich but not starving either I look around and thank God for blessing me.

so Mike (slow) cheer up you could be broke and in bad health.
I find it hard to believe a person who makes $2200 an hour 24 hours a day knows what you are going through
things will get better as it already seems to be happening.

I realize that times are tough for a lot of people in the US and around the world. It's nice to have a stress-relieving hobby to take you mind away from the day to day issues of life (building Tears, riding motorcycles, etc.).

I'm by no means a philosopher, but I've always looked at the glass as half-full. Think about those individuals that didn't wake up this morning; are fighting a battle with cancer; or are homeless and don't know the source of their next meal. Things could always be worse.

With the global economy being what it is, moving to another country may not improve your lot. Even with our domestic issues, I think we live in the greatest country on the face of the earth.

Not to turn this into a political post, but I noticed you implied that the last election (and current administration) is responsible for the lack of jobs. Do you think your personal situation would be better if the election outcome had been different?

Time for some tuff love.

The President hardly has much to do with what goes on locally. Do you really think that everything is Obama's fault? What have you done to make things better for yourself? Education? You seem like a nice guy, but this blaming things all on the government gets old.

I'm sorry for the way things are. Right when I finished my discount 2 year college, the country was in a recession. I plugged away and MOVED around to keep working. If relocating is not an option, well, then you are out of luck. Things have picked up out here. I know of nobody who has to get paid in potatoes. The ammunition factory up the road is hiring. A logging company is looking for experienced log truck drivers. Neither is offering to pay in potatoes. The logging company has good pay and benefits. It looks like this part of the world is coming out of the depression.

That's all I've got to say. Remember, the part of the governing body that has a lot of power is run by the opposite party. If you have to blame the government you might spread it around a bit.

We are in the depths of winter. This is the time of year when I can get a bit down in the dumps. That's normal. I blame it on the seasonal darkness and have gotten my Happy Light out to try to help. It certainly isn't "the government's fault."

Slow and others, This is a bit fragmented, but it will tell you a bit as to where all the good jobs went.

The world is going through a major labor surplus crisis right now. Jobs everywhere are in short supply. I remember reading somewhere that if every job in the USA was shipped to China, they would still have a labor surplus. The problem is we won the cold war against the communist block countries, and the quasi socialistic wall around India fell. The world has basically mostly gone capitalistic, the economic markets have gone global and products can be made anywhere there is cheap labor. On the flip side there is no more capital for producing goods than there was before the wall fell. What there was for generating jobs here in the USA, is now being distributed all over the world chasing after where it is cheapest to do the work. BTW, if everybody in the USA had a $250k/year equivalent income, there still wouldn't be enough purchasing power to employ all the surplus labor around the globe. We need the workers in other countries to unionize and demand higher wages to get there to be greater world demand for products. As long as they are getting pittance wages, even for their country, there will always be this over supply of workers. Ford had it right, his workers needed to be able to afford the products they produced. Every job needs to receive a living wage, even ones in foreign countries. Without that, there is no chance the average unskilled worker will ever have a chance at having a good wage again.

As a country we used to demand in trade treaties that the other countries have good enforced workers rights laws, and that they be allowed to unionize. Bush quit making those demands in the treaties. They need to be brought back and enforced. These treaty requirements helped increase the costs for moving jobs to foreign countries by increasing the labor costs in the foreign countries.

If you are wondering why all out US worker created capital is leaving the country to make jobs in other counties, It is because rich people and corporations lobbied congress to get the taxes on money leaving the country eliminated. That happened in stages over the past 4 decades.

BTW: I've advocated for years that import tariffs need to be based on the differences in the costs for wages, benefits, and actual environmental protection regulation compliance costs. This would go along way towards protecting US jobs as well as provide incentives towards for other countries make life better for their workers, and protect the environment.

Slow, nothing changes until something changes. Why are you going down the same road expecting to reach a different destination? Do something different and things will change.

As hard as it is, sometimes you have to jump off the sinking ship and swim for your life.
I have just done this in the past month, drove 4000 miles with no job or prospects.
Withing 1 week my wife was working and within a week and a half I was working.
Something that just couldn't have happened in my home with the economy there .
Its hard to make that decision to make the big change. I still grumble and growl that I wish we hadnt came here, miss home, but guess what, home wasn't home any more
Home is where you lay your head, where you can earn a living, NOT POTATOES AND CARROTS.
I waited until I was under water and drowning, continually clinging onto what I thought I still had, hoping it would get better tomorrow.
But guess what, the only one who is going to make it better is you
I'm starting to come to terms within myself that I did make the right choice....Finally,
Now I have to figure a way to pay for holding onto the wrong choice for so long....
But at least I know have a steady pay to start to rebuild, repay.....

You need a Honda CT90 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CT90) Of course the biggest issue is acquisition as that costs $$$. I wish I owned one for farm use. It'd be perfect for checking out fence lines and checking on the cattle. In some ways they are a near perfect motorbike to strap on a teardrop. They are small, light, street legal, and trail worthy. Plus they get over 90MPG and can handle a heavy load. In India they are often seen carrying 3 or 4 people.

slowcowboy wrote:even the big time ranchers I have worked for have had to eat balony before!

Baloney,, I'd have to spend money to get it. Tonight I had poor cattleman's food (ground beef), and I stretched it with some canned tomatoes, spices, and pasta. Haven't bought much more than milk and eggs at the store in the past few months. I'm living off of food I'd stored up over the years. Anything I buy now ultimately ends up on the farm's credit line next spring. It's looking like I'll be deficit allot after planting this next spring. This drought has been disastrous to my farm's bottom line. The feed production was less than half of normal and the farm is hemorrhaging $$$ acquiring feed for the steers and cows. Normally I'd have had a silage bag extra feed every year, but I fed that to the cows last winter because feed production was short the previous year. I got some rain early this fall, but none in the past month. My ground water supply isn't recharging so I'm really worried for next year. My crops depend on that ground water.

If I had a large water source I'd get the equipment to irrigate. I only have the farm ponds and they would be used up quite fast. Most of them are already a few feet low. One has already dried up, and I'm going to take the loader and dig it out deeper this winter. I'll likely use the manure spreader and put the muck I dig out on some hill tops. That may be all the fertilizer those pastures see this spring.
