+1 You can carry a big wad of these if you ever decide to go backpacking and the weight is negligible. Inexpensive too. I steal (borrow) cotton balls and the petroleum jelly from my wife's cosmetic cabinet. 8) 8)

While attending an airplane flyin in tennessee one year I watched a man craw out of his airplane
start a fire cook shave and be gone in minuits while talking to him I found out he had been an Alaskan bush pilot
he took hunters and fishermen into his fishing/hunting camp.
I still don't know how he did it he just used paper and wood but his fire was blazing while ours was just thinking about burning.

a small piece of copper pipe or tubing placed into a campfire makes a nice green flame
a short piece of old garden hose makes a blue flame or is it vice-aversa?

Way to go Verna! We should have plenty of campfires at the gatherings this year.

Yes, this is the cheapest I've found it. I almost bought one before Christmas at $134, but it didn't include shipping. The $111.25 includes shipping....and I just got an e-mail saying it has been shipped. Should have it by Wednesday. Guess I better get some propane in the new 11 lb propane cylinder tomorrow.

Larry, no, I ordered the Camco "Little Red Campfire" http://www.amazon.com/Camco-58031-Littl ... d+campfire . I've heard such great reviews of the Little Red Campfire, that I didn't consider the Camp-Chef. I like that the Little Red has a metal top to cover the fake logs, and that it does come with an 8 ft hose. Yes, the Little Red does cost more than the Camp Chef, but I'm counting on the opinions of so many camping friends being so satisifed with the Little Red.

I didn't know about that particular one. Judging by the pics it looks like a flame thrower.

I know this is a post to a very old thread, but it is about something I just came across today and seemed perfect as a follow-on to all the other good ideas posted here.

It is a commercially prepared "firestarter", is pricey compared to the other great ideas posted, but nevertheless, might be a consideration for some.

I have found that if you use wadded up newspaper under a pile of kindling ( of what ever type of pile you make ) when you light the paper it unwads and damages your careful pile. I stopped wadding it up and now I sort of just scrunch it up into the tube and tie it into a knot. Holds its shape while burning. After I started using a hand plane in my wood working I save a lot of the curls. Those make great fire starters, and impresses the people that I use a hand plane. I am going to start making my casket soon and I am also going to save a bunch of curls to put me on and around me. No frilly satin for this grumpy old fart.

Hey Bob, thanks for the info. there's nothing wrong with easy, and I think a 2 or 5gal. container will last a long time for the price, looks like great stuff!
