Adding insulation and wood to interior: 1947 Tourette

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Are cargo trailer door locks even designed to open from the inside? Forgive my ignorance.

I special ordered thick wall door latches to accommodate my 1.5 inches of insulation (plus 5mm ply inside and canvas skin outside... total 1-3/4 inch wall thickness... estimated... foamie hybrid design) and the screws that came with them were too short for the spec. Arrgh! :x

The OP is asking about a classic 1947 Tourette teardrop, it's not a cargo trailer.

To address the question, I haven't solved it yet in my trailer, so I've got this 30" square of un-insulated aluminum in the side of my cabin :(

I'm thinking of abandoning the foam insulation for the door and going with a thin piece of wood covered with the hull liner that the rest of the interior is covered with. No R-value, but better to touch than a slab of cold damp metal.

Oops. My bad. I guess my message is still valid, though. Thick door latches are available. Maybe not vintage, but neither is hull liner, so...

Deleted my posting because apparently I offended KCStudly.

If he was trying to do a strict restoration he would not be adding insulation and interior ply.

By my way of thinking that indicates that he is doing some modifications and was asking for help with adapting door latches to this new thicker wall condition.

Maybe I was helping by trying to provide the OP some information that he may not have been aware of, maybe not. I don't think there has been enough information given to make that call.

Things are not always so cut and dried.

Try a little tenderness.

Peace.

Yes
I am planning to add insulation to my teardrop; I am not trying to put it back to its original state. I want to warm up the cold interior with foam and a wood skin.

It sounds like there are thicker door locks available then right?

Where can you purchase these!

Have a look at this thread; I'm sure there are others, too.

Just google RV door handles/latches. I picked one up with a deadbolt for my new build for I'm thinking like 30$. It's a paddle handled latch. As a side bar...you can also attach furring strips on the interior of your trailer using some wood strips, sealed with a urethane so the tape will stick really well...then attach them to the side using some 3M VHB foam tape. No holes for attachment. It's used quite a bit in the large truck industry for cab construction. Just make sure you get some warm temps on the outside material when attaching. For what it's worth. Doug
Thinking a bit more about your strip idea

Would that be a better idea over simply adhering the wood 'panels' directly to the foam insulation? I can see that it would then give you something to screw into, right?

Thanks for your insight.

That's how I'd do it, all panel seams would have something other than foam behind them. Doug

Doug,
Thanks. I should have some interior images tomorrow evening; I'll use those to start planning. This is killing me! Can't wait to get my hands on my teardrop!
