Re: Slow needs a Bachelor PARTY

Postby Woodbutcher » Sun Jan 27, 2013 2:00 pm

What I was trying to do was get Mike thinking, outside the box if necessary. A few things came from his post. Land is expensive and is being bought up by big farmers and investors. That means there is money to be made. Maybe not a lot the next few years but soon enough. If you can't compete with them find a niche market that they can't or don't want to be in. I am not a farmer nor do I pretend to know the farm/ranch business. But I have been self employed for 40 years and have always made a good living by being able to adapt to my market as things changed. Both regulatory and the progression of my industry. So Slow needs to do the same thing. As I see him now, he is like a man sitting in a boat in the middle of a pond during a drought. The pond is slowly drying up. If he doesn't make it rain he will die. So to make it rain he needs to find a new way to make money with what he has. If Mike is going to get married he needs to find a way to earn some REAL money. Selling off a truck to buy a ring is drying up the pond. That truck can make you money, a ring will not. Find another way to buy a ring. Mike you must have enough scrap metal and old machinery sitting and rusting that could be sold. Try to turn steel into gold. My understanding is you has some small acreage and some head of cattle. If cattle can make you money where crops can't, then think about adding cattle. Are you able to grow your own feed, or do you need to buy feed. Buying feed lowers your return. Mike would know the answers. Here in Illinois we have farmers that do some interesting things on what would be called hobby farms. My Daughter lives in the city. There is a small hobby farm just over the boarder in Wisconsin, about an hours drive away. This farm raises all kinds of different vegetables. Every week they deliver by their own trucks an assortment of fresh vegetables that were just harvested the day before. You do not know what you are going to get but it is always fresh and the highest quality. So each Sunday they would deliver to her. They had a route for everyday going somewhere. We have a place in western Illinois near the Mississippi river. The town is called Galena and was the home of General Ulysses S Grant. It is a small tourist town with many nice restaurants. The local Chamber of Commerce developed a program to support local Farmers. The locals raise vegetables, honey, cheese, bakery good, etc and the restaurants buy the local products. This in turn keeps the money in the area. It works very well.
Will these things work for Mike? I don't know, but the point is if things are drying up the way you are use to making a living. Look for another way and use what you have. When I first went into the furniture making business I did it with 2 basic Sears Craftsman saws. I built and sold over 1 million dollars worth of furniture, with those saws, before moving up to big modern saws. None of my customers knew what I used to make their furniture with. We supplied a 60 store electronics retailer with 3 stereo stands. We got the order because as a small company we could produce new items faster then the big companies. When we got the first order from this company we had never seen an order this large. Plus we were near broke. We took the purchase order to the bank and worked out a loan to to keep us going. We also took the purchase order to our wood supplier and worked out extra dating on our bill for materials. All this was done in a few short weeks and we were in production. This moved us to the next level. Bigger building, and better equipment. Mike can do the same thing. While you are awake at 3 AM, search the internet for alternative ways of running a small ranch and farm in your area. Armed with a good business plan, you may be able to secure a loan. If not you have some friends here that may be interested. But be it a bank or individual investors, they want to see how you will be able to return a profit. Maybe investigate small business loan or special programs through the government. They give money away all the time. Search for it. Mike, you are just as worthy as anyone else. You are a hardworking guy who just need s to work smarter not harder. It can be done.

Woodbutchers advice is pretty sound. Just my 2 cents but if you live at home with your parents and you can't afford a ring, maybe its not time to get married. What's the rush?
If she loves you, she will work with you to get your stuff together.

Amen, Slow! Speaking as one who got married at 18 and am still married to the man 40 years later, I say go with your gut and let the details work themselves out!

TDN is working on a plan :)
but, it depends on if Slow has his heart set on picking out a ring for her ..... or.....
if his :worship: Angie wants to choose her own.

Also, most jewelry stores have an installment plan so you don't always have to plunk it $$ all down at once. Also, check out some of these choices as I went around to each of them in our area the last two days and found some beautiful sets for much less than a jewelry store.

Please consider an antique shop or second hand/estate sale as some gorgeous vintage pieces can be found there. It is relatively inexpensive to re-size a ring, but about the most a size change be reduced or added is one ring size.

K Mart had $1600 sets (diamond) down to $400 at my locale through Saturday of this week. WalMart has rings for marriage at their counter and our Sears and Kohls have great departments. And folks, these are nice rings; and I've had experience making jewelry as well a wearing it and buying it myself. (Dean and I got engaged recently and I ordered my ring and finalized its plans just yesterday. :FNP )

I also have some other bling that could work for you, Slow, but size does matter on these, that's why I asked what size she wore. I have been immersed in my own wedding plans so I've done quite a bit of research and looking for myself recently. Let me know what you think.

There is even a guy on here Grizz who is making his own rings, now wouldn't that be more "From the Heart" then some cheap store bought trinket that anyone could buy. 100% original just like your and her's Love

Mike
Just buy her the ring she wants. Or you will regret it for the rest of your life.
