Winter road trip

Postby mombear » Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:16 am

Took my tear drop on a road trip of 4700 miles, it performed great and we slept in every night, after this trip my DH said its toooo cozy for him. So I guess I won't be taking him with me on road trips LOL. Really, it was 19* out and we woke up in the night and it was too hot in the camper, didn't even have the heat on. the cracked widows were opened all the way and I opened the door to get an instant cool down, then back to sleep. One thing I find frustrating is being dependent on power for his CPAP machine. If we didn't need power we could be more flexible about where to stop for a rest, until we get to our stop. another thing in that small space his machine is too loud for me even though when I'm at home I can't hear it.

My CPAP machine has an adapter that I can buy to run off of 12V. Check with the manufacture of you machine to see if his does as well.

You can also get a longer hose for the machine and could put it in a different location or maybe even outside (covered). Earplugs? There is always a solution to any problem, you just need to figure it out. Maybe leaving DH home is that solution!

Not being able to sleep well would kind of put me off a bit as well, the possibility of waking up dead is a real downer, and not having a CPAP can do that. Seriously the problem is curable, even those that do not have a 12 adapter can be run from an inverter. You may have to size the battery and charging system for it but is do able.

right now I don't plan on any re-modeling, but just won't take the teardrop in the winter, we can spread out in a tent for three seasons. I will look into a CPAP that runs off of 12 volts, when he needs a new machine, he will know what type to get. I do plan on keeping him around for a bit.

CPAPs should not be a problem. Mo and I both use them and all of the machines that we have seen can run on 12 volt power. Both CPAPs running still allow us to go for 3 nights on a single battery. The voltage does get down too far on the third night. I do suggest that you use the machine without the humidifyer when using 12 volt power. Our CPAPs plug in via an accessory plug-in (aka, cigarette plug-in). We have two plug-ins at the head and two more at the galley end.
Look at the bottom of your machine and it will tell you if it is adaptable to 12 volt. Really, though, CPAPs are not that big of a hinderance, you just have to adapt to it.

Forgive Slowcowboy. He isn't married yet and is, therefore, still an idealist. Soon enough, he will learn that a little vacation away from ones spouse now and then can sometimes make a marriage better.

However, it would be nice if your DH could go with you once in a while; and, for vacations. If your DH's CPAP isn't adaptable, you may need to get a newer model. Many of the newer ones are smaller, quieter, and can be run off batteries.

Check with his Doc and see if a Mouthpiece is an option, depending on the type of apnia it may be, I'm obstructive so mouth piece is an option.
They often prescribe them for Sleep aps that remote hunt and such
I've used one and it does work, Not a prescription one but inexpensive https://puresleep.com
can't use it right now, have a couple problem teath.
So its the machine,,,lol
Wife hate listening to it, I hate using it. But I've wore out 2 machines so far.
I'm eventually going to pipe through fron the toungue box and use a longer hose
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

I got back Wednesday from a 1600 miler. I towed my pointy trailer down the Oregon Coast and on into CA where I spent 4 days in the Napa Valley at Bothe State Park and volunteered for a couple of those days in dispatching hazard trees in the campground and one that was across a trail.

I stayed at good old Honeyman State Park which is south of Florence, OR. It was sheltered from the gusty winds that were hitting the coast. I parked in the full hookups area because then the bathrooms are not used as much. There weren't many people camping this time of year though.

The next stay was a night at a CA state park, Burlington. It was the spendiest..$35 and had no hookups. The showers were pay showers and the one I used had a plugged up drain and the whole floor flooded--it even ran out the door...ICKY! The campground was dark and eerie this time of year, with very few level spots.

Napa was great. It was warmer than here, and I got to camp for free, except for the showers. The showers and restrooms were much cleaner than the Burlington ones and there were hosts, who were friendly and helped guide my trailer back in. I found out that I can run the furnace on battery power and it lasted--I hooked up the trailer pigtail into my pickup and idled for ten minutes twice and that seemed to do it. I'd also filled up my fridge with food--that area is a spendy one.

On the way home, I hustled to get back into Oregon and stayed a night at Harris Beach State Park which is just north of Brookings. Brookings lived up to its reputation for having nice, unseasonably warm weather and I didn't want to leave. That campground had the most people in it of any during the trip, and all the oceanside spots were reserved or full, but I found a nice one to plug into that was close to the restrooms. That campground even has a laundry, which after doing a clothing inventory, I decided not to use. I went on up the coast--the windshield wipers came on at Bandon, and stayed on the rest of the day. I stayed that night at Devils Lake State Park which is in downtown Lincoln City, OR. Since I live in the woods, it isn't a bad thing to camp in town. It is a different experience.

That state park had signs up to please camp at the higher (elevation wise) sites so as not to be flooded should it storm. There was just a light rain and drizzle all night. Then it was home for me the next day.

I have a tentative trip in the works in April. We will stay at Fort Stevens State Park which is close to Astoria, Oregon. There's a lot of history in that area. A lot of wet weather too, which I say as I dry out from going for a walk this morning.

stumphugger , Thank you for your information about the parks. As I am planning my out west trip in 2015 that information will probably be very important to me as I make my plans . I will have to stay in some parks and nice to know about pay showers condition ground condition (hilly rough etc. ) I just wish I could find more of these and with detail. Your Info was great . How much were the pay showers? I know that might change but hopefully I wont be blown away by the cost.
Thank you so much

The CA shower price varies. In the dark and scary campground, it was 4 minutes for 75 cents. At Bothe, which is in a very spendy valley, it started at 3 minutes for a dollar and I think each additional quarter got you another half minute. The host mentioned that it was a good deal for the Napa Valley.

Warshington's prices also vary, a little, but are not as much as CA's.

I have also stayed at Oregon's LaPine and OH NO! I can't recall the name, but it is by Chiloquin on Hwy 97. Both of those were quite nice except the shower wasn't heating at LaPine, but a contractor came along and fixed it. The Chiloquin campground has a logging museum across the highway, and you can get there on foot by following a trail from the campground, under the highway, and across a foot bridge.

Mary C.
We would love to help you out if you are coming to Washington State. We have stayed at a good number of campgrounds and washroom facilities have always been a high prioity for us a tent campers |(soon to be full time teardroppers only.....grand kids can use the tents)
and yes there are some pay showers but 50 cents usually covers it (Sandi sometimes spends 75 cents......longer hair??)
But we know of some wonerfull places to visit and camp where the showers are free! and Hot!
Please don't be shy about contacting us when you start to plan your holidays (vacation) out west.
We have been using other TnTTT members here on the Forum to plan our upcoming summer trip and would love to return the favor!

mombear didn't mean to hijack thread and I am sorry you and your DH are not having a pleasant TD experience. That was a long trip but I do think you should try working on The CPAP machine thing. You can always camp by yourself! Hope you can work it out :) and you are always welcome to camp with the tears.

I am hoping to go to some tearjerkers events. I now have a plan for his CPAP machine and we won't road trip with it but will camp. I don't believe that he likes to sleep in it. So when WE go we will probably take a tent with us. Thanks for the encouragement. When i road trip by myself I will take it.
