Anyone see a problem with this idea?

Postby stanimal » Sun Feb 17, 2013 11:03 pm

In thinking about my electrical system, I am probably going to have and AC system that feeds a few outlets, and a DC system that runs the lights, radio, and a fan.

I was thinking of getting a converter, but they seem to be pretty expensive for my purposes. I already own a multi stage battery charger (I don't remember if it's 2 or 3).

My thought is that if we are in a campsite where we have power, I can just plug the charger in to one of the teardrops outlets and charge up the battery during the day when we are off doing our stuff, then use the juice during the evening and night. My eventual goal is to get a solar charging system in place, but that's not going to be in the initial build.

Any thoughts are appreciated as always.

That's how my system works, but I wont have the opportunity to really try it out for a few more months, what with the winter and all.
110 comes into a powerstrip in the front cabinet (behind my head when sleeping) 1 outlet dedicated to the charger. Another outlet sends power to the rear where I have a duplex on the forward side of the bulkhead near my feet and a strip of outlets in the galley.
Only problem so far is that when plugged in to 110 my automotive stereo reception goes all to hell.
Good luck!

The battery charger is a converter... it just has the additional circuitry to charge a battery and maintain the voltage levels.

I ran all the 12VDC in my first teardrop off of a 5A Battery Tender... didn't even have an on-board battery. If I wasnt able to plug in the charger, I ran all the 12V from my car battery.

That is how most travel trailers powered dc lighting for years before the RV industry started with inverters and converters and need for large batteries and generators to power firdges and lights and TV's and VCR and blenders and loud stereos.... Most all the things I want to leave behind when camping...

Also consider adding charge line from TV battery so when on the move you can charge TD battery, or if you are in camp with no shore power you can charge trailer battery off tow vehicle....
