Interior 110v lights

Postby Keystone » Wed Feb 20, 2013 9:48 am

Getting conflicting info so I figured I would ask those with real world experience.

My 7X16V has two 12v interior overhead lights. Those will be fine for quick use. I will add two 110v light fixtures high on the walls. I am being told that I should use LED light instead of 2' florescent lights. They claim that the florescent don't last long in a trailer. I am being told this by someone that sell the LED light fixtures. Those of you using florescent lights how have the held up?

I'v had them in my cargo conversion for the last two years. Mine were sold as closet lights, with a pull chain, and I had them installed in place of the 4' traditional ones you see in this type of trailer.

No problems with the bulbs at all.

Why add 120 volt lights. If you have a battery charger/converter you have an unlimited supply of DC. If you have AC available you run off the AC, making DC, and run all your lights that way. If you don't have AC hookups you have the ability to run all the same lighting off of your DC system. I see no need for two sets of lights. I've never seen a sailboat (other than a mega-yacht) wired with both DC and AC lighting.

Just a thought.

Cheers,

Gus

What I have heard is the florescent bulbs don't hold up in extreme temps like if you were to leave your trailer out in the barn for the winter, the next time you wanted to camp you would need new bulbs. I don't have experience from this yet but it sounds plausible.

I have 8 fluorescent bulbs in my unheated shed and haven't replaced one of them in the 6 years since I put them in. They still work just fine every time I turn the lights on.

I have heard the same comments Randy. I know some folks around here (MN) use T8's in unheated outbuildings and they do fine there.

I live in Ohio. Our winters on average have nightly lows usually in the low teens down to the single digits.

You're a bit warmer than us during a normal winter.

I finished my TD in may of 2007. I have pulled it over 24,000 miles (that's a lot of bumps!). I store it in an unconditioned storage unit.
So far I have not had to replace a bulb. It is a 12 volt rv fixture with two bulbs.

Yes, I think that if you buy an RV light fixture, they are made to take the bumps and vibrations.

I carry a small battery charger as I rarely camp with hookups...When I do I can plug in the charger to help my small battery and still run lights, fan, and portable dvd player if needed... Without hookups and the battery goes dead I depend on battery powered lanterns or propane....Haven't been left in the dark yet....Just didn't need the ac wiring hassle for a 4x8 teardrop...
If you see my harley on a trailer,,,,call the police cause it's being stolen...

Kind of a smart ass'ed response to legitimate suggestion made with good intentions.

Good luck.
