Fire extinguishers?

Postby les45 » Sat Mar 02, 2013 4:37 pm

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere before but I couldn't find anything definitive by searching.

Who carries one? Where do you store it? What size? etc..etc..

Small abc in rhe suv and one in the galley in the water cabinet. There was a thread awhile back about co detectors and smoke detectors and there was some discussion there.

I carry a small extinguisher in the tow and under the hatch next to but far enough away from where I expect to be cooking. I figure engine fire and cooking fire will be the most likely problems.

The last discussion that I recall is here http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=52403&hilit=smoke+detector
I keep several around. You can buy some disposables by Kidde that are rated for either Marine or Automotive. They are capable of handling electrical and flammable liquids, as well as other materials.

I keep several around, as I have said before, I do stupid.

When I worked on trucks we changed out fire extinguishers if the pressure gauge was out of the full charge range. I have saved several of the ones with metal valves and had them recharged. They won't recharge the ones with plastic valves. It's standard practice for any commercial business to have all extinguishers inspected on a regular schedule. One of the things they will do when inspecting a small extinguisher is to hit the bottom with a rubber mallet, this keeps the powder from caking up. I keep at least one extinguisher in each vehicle and camper. When on the campsite the extinguisher sets by the right wheel of the trailer.

Don't go without one. Our toys are too expensive to lose because we don't have a $30 extinguisher...

We have a fire extinguisher in the tow vehicle and one in the galley. Better to have it and never need it then the other way around.

P.S. I also have bear spray (a gag gift from my husband) on the other side of the galley.

I carry a 2 1/2 pound dry chem abc in the camper a 5 pounder in my truck along with a 2 1/2 gallon pressurized water extinguisher. The PW has been converted to CAF (Compressed Air Foam) you use use half the water add 2 ounces of HE Laundry liquid or dawn dish soap. You drill a 3/32 hole completely through the pickup tube about 3/4 the way up. This allows the air to mix with the water foam solution, providing a sudsy solution that is 5 times more effective then plain water. With a 12 volt air compressor and some soap you can refill most anywhere You still need to protect it from freezing.

Being in the trade of firefighting, I recommend at minimum of a 2 1/2 pound ABC fire extinguisher in the galley area. A 5 pounder is better as it puts out twice as much fire which is better for white gas appliances. Remember, before heading out this spring on your first trip to pull out your extinguisher and inspect it for corrosion (rust), that the nozzle is clear, if it has a gauge that it reads in the green and turn it upside down and tap the bottom with your hand to loosen up the dry chemical. It becomes compacted over time and with the extinguisher bouncing down the road it accelerates the compaction. Scott

I have a 5 pounder in the TV and planning on another in the galley. My current TTT has a 10 pounder under the sink. I've decided that too much extinguisher is better than not enough.

+1 on taking it out, checking the pressure gauge and turning it over with a couple of sharp thumps. The powder inside should shift around smoothly instead of in a lump. I actually check it as a part of my pre-trip inspection.

I made a holster for mine. It fits into the shelf so that it won't bounce around in transit, it's removable so we can use it in another camper, and it holds the extinguisher at an easy position to grab and shoot if needed. Plus it made a perfect place to stick my clock.
