Door Seals

Postby Kody » Wed Mar 13, 2013 6:31 am

I have to start designing the doors and their seals and organize their construction. What have you fellas used for door seals and how did you attach them? I have searched thru some web sites I found (Clark Rubber) and there were drawings of many types of seals. Some of them were fitted into an aluminium track and simply slid around to fit and some appeared to require gluing in place. All of them were expensive. I need the seals to be especially efficient as a huge number of our roads in the outback are dry and dusty. Obviously, they must also keep out the rain. What have you fellas used and how did you mount them. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

My door is 3/4 inch plywood with a 1.5 inch aluminum strip screwed to it. I then put some close cell foam weather stripping (purchased from a home improvement store) on the inside of the aluminum. It isn't pretty, but it works. In fact it works better than the door edge T molding I originally used. This is the best picture I have of how my door is built. Sorry.

For a Seal I used 3M self adhesive tape. It come in several thickness and width. It is best to plan your door
with a certain seal in mind. This allows you assemble the door, and plan for the right gape where the seal
should go. You can even use part of the seal as a gauge. In my Reworking little wood camper thread ( link
below ) you can see me making a new door. The first page, last post and 3 pictures up. In that picture you
can see me taping in a spacer to get a ā…›ā€ gape around the door, but you can see two small pieces of that 3m
tape holding the door out the proper amount for the seal I’m suing. On the second page of the thread there
is a CAD drawing showing the barrel nuts installation. In that drawing you see the seal again. I again use a
small part of the seal when installing the hinge. If I did not know the thickness, the door would've been install
too far from the seal or too close to the door frame. the seal would not been that effective.
