Anyone ever get a gift for giving a "TD Tour"?

Postby Kevin & Sandy » Mon Mar 18, 2013 10:50 am

We were traveling to The Crawford State Park Gathering in 2010 and stopped at Walmart in Chanute, KS. I had opened the galley hatch up to get some water for the dog and a guy in an old pickup stopped by to look at my teardrop. By the look of his pickup I could tell he liked to go to auctions, flea markets, etc. because there was a lot of stuff in it!

Anyway, I give him the entire rundown on how I built it, where you sleep, etc. and he thanked me and left. Then he brings me a vase from his pickup, and said it was a gift from one collector to another. I gave him a strainer in return, (long story, I made a plastic injection mold for these as a college project) and thanked him.

So we continue on down the road to Crawford, and while stopped for a train, I ran down into the road ditch to grab some sunflowers for our new vase. You can see the vase in the pic.

Then last night I was watching a Public TV fundraiser and if you donated a certain amount, you could receive a Blenko Water Bottle. I thought it looked just like our vase! I went to the garage and got the vase and right on the bottom it said “Blenko”.

After some research, I found it is from West Virgina and is hand blown glass created using a metal mold. It was made in 1959 ! It doesn’t reside in the garage anymore.

Anybody else have something like this happen?

If it was your mom it doesn't count :)
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

Aww! What a killjoy ;)

I did get a hug from mom, but the lady was a complete stranger.
She was just so overjoyed by the whole idea, and all the neat bits and systems!
I really enjoy showing the trailer to people who are genuinely excited, makes my day!

I get food all the time. The first time someone brought me cookies I could not believe it, the next time I thought "I could get used to this"

One couple gave me avocados fresh from the tree in their back yard, another gave me a six-pack of beer!

I love being the center of attention, so naturally I tell a good story and make sure folks get their cookie's worth

No gifts for touring my teardrop, but I have that same vase from Blenko. Picked it up 40 years ago during a tour of their plant in WV.

We stopped for gas, er, I mean fuel (wife say's I have enough gas) out in,....uh.......hmmm..... MN, SD, MT, one of those places and a young couple drove by, stopped, and with a curious look on her face she asked; "does it, like, crank up, or raise up, or get bigger or something?". I explained the consept and offered a tour, but they declined and went on their way. (still with that curious look on her face)

I don't mind giving "tours", I think folks enjoy it, to a degree. If they are truly interested, it's worth the time, but some, like slow said, look at you like you're crazy, but still think it's neet. I just wish they would come as a group so I wouldn't have to keep repeating the same "lines" over and over and over again. ;)

Back to the subject of the thread, haven't received any gifts, but have received many dumb looks. :R

We are going to make a slide show loop for our laptop and just leave it playing in the galley.
This way we won't have to get out of the lawn chair or wake up for that matter.
