Skinning, which method???

So I am at the point in the build process where I need to consider what skinning method to use. Originally the plan was to use a filler for the screw holes and gaps. Then apply a primer and use an epoxy based boat paint for a water tight seal (maybe glass tape on the seems too). I have questioned this method a bit and thought maybe a light 4oz layer of fiberglass under the paint would give me piece of mind. Now I am seriously looking at aluminum. I originally shied away from this for two reasons. First, I thought the cost would be prohibitive compared to the other methods but I am noticing that it isn't that much more. (epoxy paint it expensive) Second, I wasn't sure if I could tackle the job alone. However, after lots of reading it seems floating the aluminum seems to be the way to go which makes it doable.

With all that said, do you guys believe the epoxy paint with fiberglass tape on the seems provide years of durability or should I invest in aluminum?

Think it depends on personal taste mate. Your right epoxy in general does cost a bomb, but work out alu sheet costs AND trim for your job first then make a proper decision.

I went with alu, but only as I wanted an airstream style look

I will be using FRP and PVC trim purely because I dont want to usee aluminium as I will be painting but want a good smooth waterproof surface and Im too lazy to fill and sand etc.

Having said that I may just paint the wood and stick the trim over the joints so I can get camping quicker.

Many of us have used regular oil based paint like Valspar tractor paint or Rustoleum over a good primer. However, the prep work is the most important part. I used CPES over 1/4" plywood with 4" fiberglass tape and epoxy on all corners. Also used Smiths Fill-it for all those little cracks and dents. Whatever you use, make sure each component is compatible with the next.

we glued canvas to the ply/ masonite and painted with latex exterior house paint.

Can see the weave, but we really like how it worked for us.
