Eureka !! , think I’ve got it now .... only the top part where the angle bracket is , needs to be close to the wall ... the rest of the framing can surround the AC unit up close ... The unit will just push into the opening .. The top framing located slightly above the angle bracket to clear ..... Getting the wood out ...

George , what were they thinking ? .... mounted high on the wall, raising the center of gravity , and over a window where it can leak down and rot the window opening and surrounding wall ...a Very expensive fix at an RV dealers ... I really wonder sometimes about RV designers...

From what I could tell it was installed in the side in a housing that has a flange on the outer edge. I suspect it is sitting in a tub that drains out through the bottom somewhere. It does sit up high, but it is still lower than a roof mount. I suspect it is designed this way to make it more aero dynamic and fit into smaller spots. On my larger build (after the #1) I may look at this install a little closer.

GPW, I really like the way that is coming along. If I were installing your AC unit, I'd put it on some sort of slideable shelf with a stop to limit travel fore and aft. Surround the unit opening with a rubber flange to keep the weather out and maybe an outer hatch door just to keep water out while heading down the road. But then again, I tend to make things more complex that need be. I am sure your method will work fine and in retrospect, I wish I would have put in an A/C unit. There are some places the wife won't want to go because temperatures will be above 90 degrees. Go GPW... You'll be done shortly

You may wish to make the bottom of the AC hole sloped a bit to the outside so rain water drains out, rather than puddles. Also look at what the AC unit expects for mounting.

When I set up my a/c that is how I do it also. Mine sits on a tripod, but I lower the tripod just a tad, so there is a very mild slope to the back.

Mel, the thing is , the AC won’t be riding in the trailer ... ever..., no need for sliding trays or other devices ... The AC will ride in the truck , in it’s little box . When we get to where we’re going , we just pop it in the trailer ... Much simpler for me to deal with ... Just trying to keep it SIMPLE ... Around here it’s always warm , especially in EVAC season , so an AC is mandatory ... and at the top of the wife’s “must have list” ...

Eagle , I guess this will be similar to yours, put it in when you need it ... If it’s cool outside , leave it at home ...

The only thing I’m not sure of is the outside AC door ... May need to install some hard points in the foam (before we cover it) above the AC to hinge the door to ... Not a problem ...but we must do that Now ... could do it after the covering is on , but it won’t look as neat ...

The only problem with leaving them at home is knowing when to leave them at home. LOL We went to Niagara Falls one year in July and we (me) froze my butt off! I brought the a/c, but not the heater. So ended up having to buy more fleece blankets.
I think there was another time I brought the heater, but needed the a/c.
So now, if I go to a site that has no electric, the a/c and heater stay home. But if electric is available, for the most part they both come with me. Just to be safe.

The mission of this humble trailer build is to mostly " sit in the driveway” , providing “peace of mind” for those “what if” situations when we need to Bugout... and for an undetermined period of time ... Traditionally , EVAC around here for storms is typically three days ... Drive somewhere, wait till the storm passes , come home and access the damage ... Katrina EVAC lasted Six Weeks ... Nobody was prepared for that , but the folks that seemed to fare the best were the ones with little travel trailers .. a comfortable , private,Cool, INEXPENSIVE place to stay ... Imagine renting a Motel room for 6 weeks (with pets) ...That’s a Budget Buster... one storm , there goes the retirement ...

Just had a thought ( occasionally I do think ). Are you always sure that you will have power to run the AC? Might see about getting funds for a generator.

Never ends, does it? I would at least invest in a good heavy gage extension cord. I like the blue ones, coast a bit more but they lay flat. The cheaper orange ones I just do not like. Also the orange ones do not like cold weather, but then you don't either.

I was mentioning making the bottom sill of the AC mounting hole sloped out. That way any water that gets on it drains out. At some point water will get on it, either from rain water running down the unit's sides, or a spill over from the condensate drain.

I saw before that you mentioned tilting the unit for the unit's drains, but no mention of sloping the bottom of the mounting hole.

Ran’, The wife already thought of the generator ... one for the house and a small one for the trailer .. The basic idea of EVAC , is to drive till you find somebody that has power ... With cell phones now we can call ahead or text our friends... when nothing else worked , texting worked ...Can also track the storms so we don’t go the wrong way ... Predictions of landfall and storm path have gotten pretty darn Good now ...
Quite a well practiced Art to a comfortable EVAC... I can’t count with toes and fingers how many times we’ve had to leave... that many ... and a few we should have left for ...

Back to the AC ... more pics of the hole , the plate and the fit ... so far ...


Bogo, the foam slopes from 3/4” on the bottom plate to 0” at the base of the floor ...or will by the time we’re finished shaping it ... That should help eh ?

Ps. I did cut out the hole with a jigsaw, and finished it with the serrated steak knife .... The Foamling’s most highly valued tool ...

I'm sure it was tough making a cut that size in a perfectly good Foamie wall. It was for me and all I cut was a three inch round hole for the water inlet. Looks like you got it right!! Measure twice, cut once and pray you did the math right! That's what I did! It's normally the math that gets me and I got A's in high school and college math. I guess I should have paid more attention in grade school

Mel we never did worth a hoot in Math ... any time ... and have to measure three times , check it and then measure again ... just got Lucky this time ...
Took the wife out to Lunch , came home , took a long well deserved nap , ready to start on the trailer .... and now it’s raining .... again ...
At least we can work on the framing of the inner wall plate .. get that done , and we can glue and screw it all in solid ... ready for a test fit of the unit ... then we can make the fine “adjustments “ ..
Windows and door hinges still due in on Monday , once we get those holes cut (same way as this one ) we can finish the covering , and start painting ... coming along now ... I can still kick myself in the arse for not starting during the Cooler and drier season ... Good lesson to be learned there ..
