Forest,

I think you have low humidity in your area, in Utah; so, I think you should be okay with it. I doubt that there would be enough build-up of humidity from the swamp cooler to cause a wood-swelling problem, unless the cooler was blowing directly on the wood...or your tools...could cause tools to rust if it blows directly on them for an extended period. I say go for it.

Forest, I think some posts may have caused this thread to drift.
You are talking about putting a swamp cooler in your garage, not your in trailer, correct?

I found this on builditsolar.com
http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/Co ... Cooler.htm
My thought is used with a fantastic fan roof vent you wouldn't need the fans. Just a small water pump in the box hooked on a window. Very light, very low cost , easy to build and good for boon-docking. :NC Bad part is it does not work very good with higher humidity. For the cost it might be worth a try.

Off the subject I have a post on builditsolar that cut my heat bill in half.Really :D

Where I work we took a couple of smaller swamp coolers (About 30" sides) and mounted them on rolling tables about 30" high. Add a long water hose (1/4" plastic airline) and extension cord ,they roll around to where we are working. FEEL GREAT!  50' x 100' shop with four 12' x 16' overhead doors so we have plenty of fresh, dry air to cool
We ain't skeer'd of the dark!

I am building a evaporator cooler for my teardrop. It will be a evaporator pad in a box over a window using the roof vent to draw air thru the pad box. The water pump will be in a bucket on the ground with the return water running from the pad box down in to the bucket.
The pad box will fit in to the screen slot

The pad box glued to coroplast will replaced screen and will be painted to for UV protection.

This chart may be useful for estimating cooling performance with varying outdoor temperature and humidity

A evaporator cooler is a compromise. But if you are boondocking without a generator. It is one of the few options. Sometimes 10 degree is all that is needed to make it semi comfortable. Thanks for the chart.

Anyone that works in their garage in Las Vegas on a regular basis has a swamp cooler attached. I have been thinking about installing one myself. Our humidity hovers 3-8% most of the year. In monsoon season for about 2 months we hover at 30-40%. So for most of the year, they are very efficient cooling.

In my teardrop, I have a 4000 btu air conditioner.
