Sealing floor

I just got done building and mounting my floor.

Now comes the phase of sealing the wood.


I was thinking about using an epoxy resin then painting it. But I was curious if there was any better routes? Or any experience to speak-up about?

The problem with using epoxy and then painting it is that, with some epoxies, you have to wait a while before you paint it because the epoxy can off-gas, causing a loosening of the paint. IMO, epoxy is always the best to use to seal your wood; however, check with your epoxy manufacturer to see how long you should wait before covering it with paint.

For the underside of the deck, most people simply spread on the black roofing tar-gunk, which seems to work very well. I used epoxy and let it sit quite a while, as I worked on the walls, etc. Then, I sprayed on undercarriage spray (another black gunk) that I purchased from the auto parts store.

Don't forget the amine blush. Most epoxies exude an amine blush as part of the curing process. After a hard cure be sure to wash the amine blush off before sanding, filling, or any other operation. The amine blush is sort of a waxy like substance. It's okay to do wet layups, but after a hard set you have to get rid of it. Washes off with water.

I'd call the manufacturer of that primer and explain how you plan to use it and ask them what they think. They should know their product. The auto undercarriage spray has definitely worked for some of us.

It seems to me you should contact whoever makes that spray and ask them what primer to use.

Me? I'm an epoxy guy, but that Henry's black goo has been working for fifty years.
