Mark's Weekender-XL, W/ the magical sliding bed

Postby Gold5one » Wed Apr 01, 2015 7:37 pm

I want everyone to see how my latest idea worked out-- the sliding bed. With no previous plans, I figured this out in about 30 minutes, when out of curiosity, I pulled the mattress forward, up to the counter to see, if I liked the bed in that position.

Then it hit me in an instant-- a sliding bed is what I need.

So, I built a sliding bed in order to have a night time porta potti space, and then I cover it up in the daytime.
I gained 3ft of space in the rear at night, then I transferred that 3ft of space to the front of the camper in the daytime. Another advantage is the window A/C won't be so close to the bed. Have you ever seen this done before? What do you think?

The the bed frame slide track on the wall - I will screw a small strip on the wall above the bed frame, so it doesn't bounce out of the track on the road.

My Weekender-for-5 has a sliding bunk. See links for pictures/video below!

Alfred- you really did need the extra room! I'll bet you could fit 2 adults and 5 kids in my build. I was thinking about adding an overhead bunk for a teenager-- do I have enough room? ( 66" inside width).

Since I am traveling solo, I don't need potti closet.
There will be a 5000 btu ac in that window- maybe by next week.

added: I checked the forecast here- it will be 90 degrees on Sunday- We have 2 seasons here-- a 70-80 degrees winter and 85-95 degrees summer. :icedtea:

So, I am working on installing the A/C today!- then a test run later with my 800W generator to see how many hours a tank of gas lasts.

I used a 1x3 for the sides of the bed frame and 2x2 for the cross members. The 2x2 is flush with the top edge, leaving a lip that can slide in the grooved board on the wall. I"ll post a few more pictures if the rain stops tomorrow.

I hope these pictures help. The bed weight slides on the 2x2's- use bar soap or paraffin to help it slide. 2x2's are on 12" centers, but use your own judgment for spacing- this is a single wide bed. I doubt that you could slide a wider bed.
you must screw a short plywood strip to the wall above the 1x3, so it stays in the track going down the road.
