Postby tearbum67 » Wed Sep 19, 2007 6:19 pm

Im makeing good progress on the "Land Ark" (Ineed to put some updated photos in my album). Im get close to building the lower gally cabinets and Im wondering what others of us have used. Im thinking probably Plywood? If so did anyone cover it w/ ? Tile, Vinyl...? Just wondering and looking for ideas. Thanks :?

The same sandwich panel I used for the floor, walls, cabinets, bulkheads, etc. 1/8 birch ply - 3/4 framing and insulation - 1/8 birch ply

tearbum,
We glued Formica on 3/4" plywood. For the old look we used aluminum counter top edging we got at Lil Bear.

I used a premade formica countertop from HD. It is what I had. If it doesn't last I'll just replace it with something at that time. So good so far. It's holding up well even thouugh it has gotten wet a few times.

I used scrap plam left over from a job with curly Maple for the edge. Did the back splash and tear walls in the galley area with it too, very easy to keep clean. :) Danny

For the countertop on my TD I built the main shelf using 3/4" plywood and joined it to the other bulkhead pieces for strength. Then I used some leftover oak-finish click together laminate flooring to cover the plywood. I looked into a formica countertop but it's pretty heavy and expensive for the small piece I would need.

Stainless in the first 2...formica in the last one...with a scuff pattern on the stainless it hides a lot. Doug

We used formica from Menards, glued to a sandwich of 1/4 ply 1/2 foam board 1/8 ply. We even used the sink cutout for a cover. I made my own wood edge for the front and the back just runs under the cabinets. I think it comes 8'x30" so there was plenty for the table on the inside and a piece for in the drawer. I don't think I had any left over, I just kept looking for places to use whatever size piece I had.
