Side to side trailer balance

Postby dh » Mon Feb 15, 2010 6:59 pm

Ok, so front to back trailer balance can affect toungue weight as well as handling. To what degree shoud side to side balance be considered? What affect will being 100lbs heavier on one side have?

There are a lot of factors that you have to consider. Total trailer weight is probably the first. A one hundred lb difference on a trailer that weighs in at 1200 lbs, is not nearly as concerting as on a trailer that weighs 400 lbs. Center of gravity is also important, as it would affect the possibility of tipping, and handling issues, as would the distance between wheels.

As long as your weight is low and between the axles (like it is on most teardrops), 100lbs off to one side won't make a bit of a difference.

If you're making a TTT that extends over the wheels, and have a lot of unbalanced weight over one wheel and not the over, you might hit problems.

you have to consider where that difference is concentrated. draw a line from the hitch to each tire and from one tire to the other.. a triangle. the effect of any weight outside that triangle is magnified. especially to the rear of it.. and of course, how high it is. if it's below the centre of mass it's effect is drastically reduced.. if it's a spare tire mounted under the frame and to the front of the tire it won't do much. put it up on the shelf in the galley and it could be bad news.
