Alfred,

The fellow that owned that Conestoga trailer was from northern New Mexico. Really nice fellow. He used to come to the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, OR with the trailer. He had a business harvesting and drying sage, mushrooms and various plant leaves for spices. He had apermit to harvest on federal lands. He made good money and was exporting them around the world when I met him in the mid-80s.

There was another book like Rolling Homes called Afghani Trucks. I saw it once in a used bookstore years ago and regret that I didn't buy it on the spot. I was about big cargo trucks, painted with ornate, colorful patterns everywhere, tarps over really tall loads of goods and foodstuffs and spaces in front of the loads for the family to travel and sleep. That was from the early 70s before the Russians invaded. If I recall correctly, many of the photos were of those trucks negotiating the Khyber Pass.

For what it's worth.

Prem

The pursuit of a mobile shelter has been going on since the dawn of man , and his first desire to see what's on the other side of the hill... Wonder who was first to put a tent on wheels ??? I can imagine a nice Primitive TD made from bent willow poles lashed to a frame and wooden wheeled cart... and covered with animal hides... bearskin interior... could be Cozy !!! 8)
I guess after that the sky was the limit ... or the road anyway ...

Aircraftspruce.com carries all the fabric and supplies you would ever need to cover up one.

I built a 50% R/C cub for a guy and then he built a trailer to haul it. For the trailer we used the dacron fabric and it shrunk down pretty tight using a heat gun and an covering iron and we were prett pleased with it. We used the heaviest grade just for increased puncture resistance.

I can't help but thinking how much FUN one of these would be to build ... Just like building a plane , but without the bother of constructing wings, or tail surfaces ... Just have to make enough room for the stewardess too... 8)

And it should be Very Light !!! ... and rather inexpensive ... , just a little more labor intensive ;) But that's the Fun part !!! Right !!!
And for those that prefer a more rounded shape , that's easy too ..

Framing drawing ... Ribs extend the full length stringers outward , giving the TD a more "rounded" shape ... square inner framing allows for a conventional interior ...

Bumping this thread.

Anyone done anything with any of these ideas in the last 11 months?
