Dumped Windows and installed Linux

Postby rxc463 » Tue Jun 22, 2010 11:06 am

I had been having increasingly annoying crashes with my older pentium 4 computer. It came loaded with XP Pro, but became unstable for what reason I'm not really sure. I did a format and clean install with my copy of XP Home. After hours of searching for drivers, ect to clean up conflicts, I ended up with an install that was worse than the XP Pro!

I dug out a disc that I had burned with a bootable copy of Ubuntu on it. I popped it in the cd slot and booted up. Less than 30 minuets later I had a complete install and was back to surfing the web with all of my old bookmarks and settings intact.

I have to say, I am impressed and I would recomend this install to anyone even remotely interested in trying Linux. I tried it years back and just found it to be a little to geeky for me at the time. The new Linux flavors have taken almost all of the geeky out of the equation and made them even better than any Micrsoft product I have ever owned.

Anyone care to share their opinions on this?

I'm a big fan of Ubuntu. I run my media library with it. Also my daughter can beat on the keyboard while booted to linux (which she loves to do) and it does nothing to mess up the computer!

Ubuntu is easier to install than windows, easier to maintain than windows, easier to use than windows.

The only problem is that I am a gamer, so I also use windows too. I typically have at least 3 or more versions of operating systems installed on various computers at any point in time.

The only thing with linux is that it takes longer for drivers to be released, so it typically works poorly on brand new hardware for a couple months.

Linux runs much better on older computers (4+ years old) than windows. It can typically give another 3 years or so of life to older hardware.

I did the same thing a few years ago. I have no issues with viruses or spyware . I use XP Pro at work , there is never a problem using one over the other. I enjoy Linux !! :applause:

If anyone wants to just try it without installing, I recommend Knoppix.
Just burn it to a cd, pop it in, and reboot. It's Debian and not Ubuntu, but I have grown accustomed to Debian.

(of course, I'm the geek with Tux tattooed on my arm, so I could be a little partial)

I wish they'd bring back Xenix for the Radio Shack TRS-80. What am I to do with all those 8" floppy discs I have?

My son has three computers in his office, Linux, Vista, and something with the picture of a fruit on it.

Just to clarify, Ubuntu is one of the many flavors of debian, but it is debian.

Well, I don't know the difference between Lenux and Windex...

I use windows XP and my computer went down last week. It cost me $150 to have a computer guy reinstall the operating software.

Maybe I should take one of those night classes

I've never messed with it and thought it was a completely different distro.
Downloading the live CD now.

Don't windows have the advantage that you can open them at night to provide some ventilation for your teardrop - surely Linux, like any other sheet material, prevents that, even if it is transparent?

What's that you say? Not understood the question?

I run Slackware. It's more foolproof than Ubuntu. Ubuntu always crashes during the install. Considering the size of the home-build crowd here. I'm surprised someone hasn't put all the pieces together and created a Teardrop Linux.
