Camping trip #2 - First time out with Goldens

Postby Ratkity » Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:37 am

The blazing sun and my over-worked window units could hardly keep up with the temps in the high 90s in the 'burbs of DC, so off to Hagerstown, MD I went! Just went to the little KOA there for taking the dogs out for their first trip. In case they were really bad, I could just bring them home.

They weren't really bad, but they were, um, dogs! They woofed at any dogs that walked by with their masters. People didn't bother them too much. Charley wanted to charge each person coming up to get a look at the TD to body slam and get petted. At least he isn't jumping like he did when I first adopted him 3 yrs ago (he's a rescue). Buffy had some separation anxiety that seemed to increase each time I left for the bathroom or swimming pool. Not sure how to deal with that.

Buffy seemed to have high anxiety as she was panting heavily at all times no matter how cool the temps got. Charley was a cuddler in the camper and they both did well until 3 am each night when Buffy decided to sit on me. Not sure why she did that, but after settling them down again, all was well.

The campsites at the KOA were way too close, but the neighbors were very nice. One couple and I had a great time talking.

Here are some pictures:

I'm not a dog owner so take this with a grain of salt, however my son has two black labs. He and his fiance take them to a "dog park" on a regular basis so they are used to, and comfortable being around other dogs. We have two neighbors with annoying barking dogs, and when the labs are out, they completely ignore them, even though the one neighbors dogs are in eyesight.

The more they are around other dogs, the better they will get (with proper rewards for behaving).

My cat doesn't bark at all.

Very nice. Looks like the dogs took up all the room! KOA's seem to jam the site's all together. Just give us the money. I have never stayed at one for that reason. In your case, with the dogs, it certainly makes sense. Great way to see how they cope. From your photos, I would say they coped really well.

Woof, woof!!

There was this cute rolly polly Jack Russell next door named Caesar and the dynamic duo never barked at him when he was out with his humans. It was just strange dogs going by that got a few woofs.

Believe it or not, the dogs only took up 1/3 of the bed. I got the rest!

The dogs do well in doggie parks. I get a little perturbed at the fleas that jump on them that have to be dealt with when we go to them. I make sure they don't go near the end of their monthly Frontline application.

Paul, I am catless at the moment. I'm looking into rescue Tonkinese kitties at the moment. I miss the purring.
