Ever try to dado a 10 ft piece-O-ply? ...on a small router table?

For a spline joint ??

If ya set a biscuit cutter for the proper drop to center the shove it in and drag it will cut a great spline cut then just fabricate a spline to fit and glue it in ! :D

Bob Henry has the ticket...or when the work is too big for the tool, bring the tool to the work....use a piece of material as a fence, clamp it and use the router to cut your rabbet. Doug

Hey fellas! Coffee break.

bobhenry

For a spline joint ??

No.

I'm working w/ 4 X 10 ply... and all the dados have been cut. What happened is that I spied a router table on my neighbor's table saw... so we tried to rout the 10' section that way. Next time with stuff that big like Doug says I'll bring the tool to the work instead of the other way around. I clamped various fences over the rest of the work to carve the other, shorter dados and rabbets.

Now, if I'd done this sort of thing before, it'd be going a lot faster!

...but all that's left now are two rabbets on the front and rear of the trailer floor... both 3/16 deep, one 1/4" wide, the other 1/2" wide like what I just did on the walls this afternoon. Pics later tonight.

Now it's back out to the stall to bolt the supension back on then bolt the ply floor onto the chassis to make it as straight as possible so that the dado'd sides will slip onto the floor.

But first I'll mark and drill pilot holes for the 4" shedule for the woodscrews when gluing tomorrow afternoon.

:hammer:

Chris,

I know your feeling, too much work and not enough time.
Hang in there and well see you at IRG III.

When do you plan on leaving LA ?

Since this is a temporary structure knock it out and don't forget to slap a little stain on that wood!

You're a man of few words, lately, Thomas... ...however, I always like it when you pop in and say anything. :D

I can't just knock it out as I wanted to; I have a standard of precision... whether or not I actually achieve that standard is another story.

As for the stain idea, the "good" side will be the interior facing and wiped w/ Feed-N-Wax, an orange-oil/beeswax emollient; the knots' side/exterior will be painted dark red. A tan-colored tarp will cover the open top.

Here're some pics from this afternoon's hacking:

I also torqued the half-axles to their mountings w/ fresh locknuts; previously they were simple bolts to facilitate quick disassembly.

Then a couple of old buddies stopped by for a look; they helped me fish the jacketed 7-wire trailer chassis wiring cable through the tongue and crossmember. Pics of that, tomorrow.

Thanks again for lookin in!

Yeah, these days I am scrambling to just get on the board and pop in to see what's up! I remember the old days I could spend hours. I am not working on the teardrop hardly at all now, but I have less time! What's up wit that!

Thanks, Bob.

Thomas, thanks always for dropping by. :shake hands:

I ran out of steam too early Friday evening but kept at it. Then I didn't want to get out of bed Saturday morning, but I have a deadline and this thing won't build itself.

:SH

My next-door neighbor Bob came over to help with the tough job of getting the now-bowed 3/4 ply floor into the wall dados. He glued then held the wall while I drilled then screwed them onto the sides of the floor.

As I post this it's the middle of the night and I can't sleep. Think it might have been the big ol' mug of coffee I had at 7:30 PM?...

So here're some pics:

Walls up -

Image

Don't let your ply floor sit around for too long if not layed flat on the ground. This ACX began to bow, which made our job a little difficult...

On the ground - (that headboard curve just kinda happened. The piece was too tall and we talked about best sealing the front of the tarp for travelling, so here we are, with this...)

Image

Image

Next is a piece of 1/4" ply for the rear wall, chassis wiring and some paint.

Okay, I'm going back to bed.

Wow. I love the design contours you are coming up with. I'm anxious to watch the teardrop body come to life. Great job!
