Completely off topic - Diner booth project

Postby Judeyramone » Sat Aug 21, 2010 4:22 pm

I posted a link to this in my newbie intro...

... but while reading the hinge thread (http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=36852) in General Discussions, I saw the photos of gregp136's galley... jaw-doppingly fantasic! I plan to copy it someday, in it's entirety, if you don't mind.

Anyway, being a history major, especially interested in early 20th century history, and after much reading on this site... you teardroppers are a particularly retro crowd.

I posted a link in my intro, but figured some of you might be interested in my current project, so here's a few pics, not camping related by any means, but in a similar retro spirit. Diner booth under construction:

Not meant to be a plug, but idle hands are the devil's workshop, and having recently lost my own workshop - currently managing fine in GF's garage, thank you very much, where all this construction took place...

Gurl (affectionately) needs to run, and I'm realizing I similarly need to build...
Seems there's a few other Michiganders here, and if any of you need a helper, I have a month until fall semester begins...

Windbag me, but any of you who have spent any time in Ann Arbor, and are old enough to remember, Drake's is the inspiration for this project:

Heavens... first to reply to my own thread! Embarrassing, but camping related...

Babies & I did pitch the 6' dome in my folks' backyard Thursday night, and all four of us "camped out". Best night's sleep I've had in weeks.

My mom was up early & had blueberry pancakes on the griddle. Camping's best when Mama has blueberry pancakes ready before you roll out of the bag.

Wow, this is really nice! Looks very cosy and also very attractive! Sorry you didn't get an immediate response from the forum--lots of people are off camping. The nature of the subject line might be to blame that there aren't more posts here.

No worries... I'm (literally) watching paint dry... primer coat, hoping to expose spots where I need to direct my attention with plastic wood.

Funny bit... Gurl & I started this project, expecting cozy intimate evenings, chatting, etc, by low light... bottle of wine...

... between us, we have 5, ranging in age from 7 to 12...

How often do you suppose she & I get the booth? As construction has progressed, kids have been eating dinner in it on a regular basis, and while priming today, I noticed grimy hands, contaminated with BBQ sauce, etc, have raised the grain, but only where youngsters can reach...

At any rate, I continue because I like to do stuff, and babies' enthusiasm only makes it easier.
My point in posting is that this is a, seemingly, very retro crowd, and thought there might be some interest. I'll continue posting if folks like what they see.

Babies left yesterday with their mother, on vacation to ME for a whole week, and fall semester doesn't begin until 8 Sep.

... and idle hands are the devil's workshop. Kept meself busy yesterday, working on booth.

Nail holes, defects in wood, etc. filled, primer coat & everything sanded ready for another coat of primer. Like Gurl, I hate painting, but I'm good at it - a devotee of many very thin coats. It's painful to watch her try to get it done as quickly as possible, in as few coats as she can get away with...

Gurl's a horrible painter, but look what she bought me: MEGA-BEERS!!! Carpentry is a thirsty business, after all.

She also stained the table top:

Initially, the top was going to be plywood painted black, and even tho I hate black & brown together, I'm glad we salvaged the mohogany top. I think it'll look super with (many thin) coats of semi-gloss poly on it.

Can't see it in the pics, because it's dark...

... but I dropped the leg on the the table top, scuffed the new finish, and Judey's in big trouble!!!

I'll give the damaged area a few thick coats of poly tomorrow, sand, and hit the whole top with some mild rubbing compound.
