How long before you got moving?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

ok, I don't feel so bad now. Seems like there are a few who took it slow. course, there are some major overachievers, too. But that is to be expected with all things, lol.

Wow - I feel like a slow learner. I lurked off and on for closer to two years and have only just started our build (finally got the weather to strip and paint the frame - woohoo!)

I joined in Feb 2010, starting building in March 2010 when the weather got warm enough, and by May 6 I was on my first camping trip.

Of course now I want to build a second trailer, bigger, insulated, and with more attention to details. From the start my intention was a "speed" build since I wanted to get camping as quickly as possible.

I lurked for about 2 months and then started my build in june of 2010. I'd say I am about 60% of the way there. I have been working at a steady/leasurly pace.

My advice, don't put your life on hold, do a little bit every day and you will be surprised by what you get done. I think you will also enjoy the process more if its not rushed.

I joined in January 2010 and began building in March 2010 when I moved into a place with a nice big garage!

I think a lot of people feel that way! I'm already dreaming of number 2 as well!

I had already decided that I was going to build one, I was just collecting info on how. Registered then started building a couple weeks later.

I built the cabin first, buying materials as I went along. By starting with the cabin, I didn't commit to the project with a frame. If I got in over my head, I could cut it up and throw it away. Everything worked out and my tear has traveled the country, coast to coast.

I found this long after I had built one. Didn't have the benefit of all the knowledge on this forum.

don't feel bad danno. i don't remember how long i lurked before i signed up. since that time, i've sketched out half a dozen completely different designs and countless variations of those... and the closest thing to progress i can report is installing a hidden hitch receiver on my truck

I had already started a quest to build some kind of camper, but was thinking a cabover for my truck. That was Nov. My buddy turned me on to teardrops and then I discovered this site. I did not hesitate, I used Mike's Benroy plans and a basic construction method, and designed my own plans from A-Z over the next couple months and bought my steel for the frame Feb 2nd.

I was active a few years back for a long time doing a medieval reinactment and always had large canvas tents, with way too many 6' wooden poles and miles of canvas. It always seemed to rain and canvas cant be put away wet. Seemed whenever I was dateing someone or brought friends they would scatter to the wind as soon as it was time to set the pavillion up or break it down. That gets old fast lol.

Bought a sailboat and moved aboard it and stopped camping...well 5 years passed and I realized mostly everyone at the marina is married couples and that doesnt help when your single so last summer I started up back in the SCA again http://www.eastkingdom.org/index.html and foolishly bought a smaller canvas pavillion instead of building my vardo.

Well I decided what the hell Im unemployed have time and no money lets build it.... used my tax return and sold my last canvas pavillion for 20 dollars more then I bought it for and started my build. Its not done, but pretty close... good enough to camp in it.

Dont wait, if you want it start now... we never know how long we have and people have a habit of putting things off till we get a little older, well I buried my first boyfriend at 22 from brain cancer who thought he had all the time in the world... well we dont, so live large and enjoy the ride!

I discovered this site from a link on a boat builders site, I had never seen or heard of a TD then. I spent nights reading everything I could and dreaming, I just figured someday but not right now. Fast forward a few years and I loose my free room I use a couple of nights a week ( we bought new airplanes at work and the new pilots got my room) so now I had my reason to build.
Can't say I am close to done yet but I have been sleeping in it for a while already.

I lurked, (planned for about 2 months) before buying steel and getting started. It did take me a year and a half building off and on. Most of the time it sat during the cold months because it was stored in my barn over the winter. Had I been able to get it out during that time I may have been able to finish it in about 9 months. But you can't finish it till you start! So get going. LOL! Hope to see you at a gathering soon.

Sometime between 1999 and 2005, I think around 2003 my ex husband came across my tear while working. He used to drill water wells and in the middle of South Gate near the riverbed (concrete drainage) he spotted the tear. He came home and asked me if I still wanted a teardrop trailer cause he found one. Of course I said yes, and off we went to see if the folks wanted to sell it. The lady was so nice. She said it belonged to her ex's friend and if I wanted it to hall it off the property. It was christmas so we gave them $100 cause they had a couple of kids and it was the right thing to do. Home came the trailer and there it sat. When we divorced I made him take the harley (couldent afford to keep it) and kept the tear. She sat a good while after that till this year when I decided now was the time.
I would like to say she is ready to go but she is not, but progress is being made even if it is slow.
I am soooooo impatient!
She should be able to get out sometime late summer, I hope.
I love the fact that I can be creative with her. I wander the aisles at hd and lowes and think OOOO! I can use that for this!

Well, digging up my old thread, because I have 5 sheets of plywood in my truck and have started building a temporary work structure in the driveway. I do have a barn, but it's so full of other projects that I don't have room to build in there.

Pictures to come in a build thread!
