Woodpecker damage to house trim

Postby Daniel Bernoulli » Thu May 26, 2011 1:50 am

A few years back I had some ant (maybe termite too) infestation behind the siding and trim of a corner of my house. Most, if not all, of the ants are gone now. However, a woodpecker continues to make holes in the corner wood trim pieces (8'7"x3.5"x0.75"). I have already replaced one trim piece with pressure-treated wood. Didn't slow him down a bit. So... What can I get from the big box stores that looks like wood but will prevent the woodpecker from making holes? I have received a recommendation for HardieBoard already. Thanks.

Metal flashing doesn't work, either. Unless waking up every morning thinking your home is being strafed sounds like good times. ;)

A wood pecker decided he liked my neighbors aluminum facia and woke the neighbors up to his LOUD pecking a few times. My neighbor wasn't too pleased with his early-morning rat-a-tat-tating to say the least. Not sure how he got rid of him but we haven't seen the little pecker head in awhile. :D

My neighbour had a problem with a wood pecker just under his window sill, he ended up hanging a large piece of flagstone with some lag bolts, since then the bird left.

I have to go with the Hardie Plank. That's what I plan to use to repair the squirrel damaged trim pieces on my house.

That stuff ought to bend a woodpecker's beak.

I had the same problem with woodpeckers at my house and they pecked five or six holes in the siding, which the squirrels would enlarge and then make their home in my attic!! When we had our house re-sided in cedar, they've since stopped. Not sure if it was the cedar or not but it's nice not being woken up on weekend mornings by the banging of woodpeckers. It's even nicer to not find dead squirrels and their crap in my attic.

Since it's a common problem up here. lots of people have lots of solutions. hanging a fake owl off the eaves, changing the color of the paint on your house, shotguns, rifles, handguns, etc. The only solution that really seems to work is hanging strips of mylar film from the eaves. The shimmering off of the mylar seems to annoy the woodpeckers.

Reminds me of the story my friend told me when I was lamenting about the woodpecker at my house. My friends dad had the same problem at their mountain cabin and called my friend to ask him if he still owned his .357 magnum? My friend replied that he did and his dad asked him to bring it to the cabin with him over the weekend. My friend asked his dad why and his dad replied that he had this woodpecker that he could not get rid of.

My friend replied that it was going to be difficult to kill a woodpecker using a handgun but his dad replied that he had a plan. He would stand inside the cabin, wait for the woodpecker to start pecking, walk over to the spot and fire the weapon from inside the cabin, thus killing the bird. My friend said "but dad, you'll leave a giant hole in the wall"... His dad replied "I can fix the gd wall, it's the bird that I can't kill" True story!!!

http://www.birdwatchersgeneralstore.com/FlickerOwl.htm Good source for a couple of ideas i.e. use plexiglass they cant get a grasp and one other use sticky i.e. Tanglefoot or Roost-No-More
One final resource http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/natres/06516.html and good luck and when one method fails use two. :worship:

Have you considered that the woodpecker is doing you a favor? He is not destroying your house to sharpen his beak! YOU STILL HAVE INSECTS LIVING IN YOUR HOUSE. They will ultimately do more damage than the woodpecker. Fix that problem and the "pecker" will leave

Girl that made me laugh "we haven't seen the little pecker head in awhile"

I too had a woodpecker try to get into my aluminum facia right out side my bedroom window and like the saying He thought he had to get up early to get the worm, bugs?

I too wonder where the "lil' pecker-head went"
