reversing tongue on HF trailer

Postby kzhorse » Sun Jul 24, 2011 11:51 am

The way I am built I have a little to much toung weight should I have any problems with the axle pulling it backwards? I dont have any room to move the axle forward without getting into the door.

Do you mean to remove the tongue from one end of the HF trailer and fix it to the other end, so the trailer is the other way round?

If so, and you have too much tongue weight now, you'll get negative tongue weight with the trailer the other way round and that's a recipe for disaster when towing.

But can an axle be used backwards? - no problem, as long as it doesn't have brakes.

Thanks for the reply,I figured it would not be that easy.I guess I will just have to load the rear when towing.

Moving the axle aft is just going to increase your tongue weight. An option might be to rearrange the stuff inside your trailer while towing to get a tongue weight within reason.

A couple of questions come to mind.

What is the capacity of your vehicle as far as tongue weight goes. Is your tongue flexing at all or does it seem OK.

There is really nothing wrong with going with a higher than "rule of thumb" tongue weight as long as you don't exceed the strength of your tongue or the capacity of your hitch.

Cheers,

Gus

Get it towing level ! You have all the weight tipped forward. If you have a receiver type hitch get an up sweep ball mount. If you weigh it with this tongue height and weigh it again level you will see a hugh difference in the tongue weight.

Tongue weight???....... First off have you put tongue on scales....

Car seems to be sitting level in pictures and angle on trailer indicates hitch on car is to low....

Also the way coupler is on tongue looks funky like its to high or mounted wrong... Got a detailed picture (close up)...

Need additional information....

Looks like the standard HF coupler mounting.

This mod will get you a couples inches up and improve towing and backing by extending the tongue a bit.

If you flip the tongue, I would suggest flip the wheels so they roll in the correct direction too.

You don't flip anything but the little plate that the coupler sets on. simply un bolt the coupler plate and turn it over then slide the 2x2 thru to as far as you feel good about going. I took mine all the way to the rear and used the back end for a 1 1/4 draw bar receiver. My trailers are extended to 10' bodies so if I remember correct my 2x2 was 13' - 14' and extended my stock tongue forward 18"

here is the rear "receiver" on my barn

Then you CAN take it with you
