I picked up a toy box yesterday

Postby Woodbutcher » Mon Sep 05, 2011 10:04 pm

I hit the flea market and picked up this cool old toy box. I thought it would make a great tongue box. It's made of steel with a wooden bottom. Both latches still work. It has been poorly brush painted and some paper decals added. That should strip off easily.

I believe this is the trunk from the back of an old Model A or T. It is not very heavy and should make an easy fix for my next build.

Good find. :applause:
Interesting hinge design. Looks like it will be easy to add a gasket to the lid to seal it up.

What kind of handles would have been used originally?

The original handles I have seen on others were leather. There is some sort of old gasket on it, that needs to be replaced. The reason I bought it was I saw one at another show all repainted and looking great. He wanted 300 bucks for it. This one was 20. I can buy a lot of paint and stripper for that. The lock will need to be re keyed but then it should be good to go.
